Having clearly been given a bum steer on a Fiat colour, perhaps a comparison of the actual paint required and what I bought may give me some idea of what to try for next?

Hello TStanb,

When i blew my frame in i had spray cans made up at a car paint shop using RAL 9006 White Aluminium as the code.......and applied lacquer on top after that.

Came up lovely and was a good match taking the passing of time into account. (bigthumb)

Here is the RAL 9006 weiss aluminium code for mix and fill into upol aerosol cans. It is a basecoat and comes up really nice with a 2 pot clear coat.

This is what my frame looked like when I used that Fiat paint code.
The Fiat colour was an almost exact match to the original paint.
The wheels were done in RAL9006, which is quite different to the frame paint.
How original is the frame you are comparing your new paint to?

You're correct.
And now I've cleaned it and got the frame into some decent light, I can see all the other brush touch-ups done in the past. The main colour is definitely not metallic or glittery and definitely a non metal grey.
I'm not planning on restoring the bike...it's quite clean and crack/corrosion-free. I just want to get it  roadworthy and reliable. Besides, the area I need to touch up is completely out of view, so it's not desperate.
It wouldn't hurt, I suppose, to sand back a small area to see if there is any useful paint history to go on
Thanks
