Jota headlamp question

On a 1979 Jota (later style Bosch headlamp) how does the headlamp ring attach? The ring I have has an indented hole at the bottom for a screw, but there is nothing in the headlamp shell for a screw to attach to, only a small rectangular hole at the bottom. I assume there is a small part missing here. I can try making the part but a photo or diagram would sure make it a lot easier. Does anyone have a photo by chance or maybe even the part? Thanks in advance.

I tried to take a photo but my digital camera that does closeups has disappeared right at the same time my son left to go back to university, quite a coincidence :D. Anyway, yes, you are missing a part, a small U-shaped steel springy thingy, only about 2 cm long, that clips to the inside of the headlight bezel ring and has a little nut (that the retaining screw screws into) crimped into it.
I think you may be able to order this as a BMW part, or even a genuine Bosch part, since the 180mm headlight is still in production. Or Wolfgang/Andy Haerter may have it. Or, somebody here may have a totally knackered headlight that this can be salvaged from?
But what's wrong with a few turns of duct tape wrapped around the outside of the headlight, at least the expensive Fresnel lens won't fall out? :D :D

You are correct Ken,

The BMW part will work correctly. Try motobins or motorworks in UK or Southcoast boxers

No, the right part does look a bit like that but it curls at one end to attach to the headlight rim, and there's a 4mm (IIRC) nut attached to the other side of the "U" by the spring crimped over it.
I still like the duct tape idea myself :D

Ken thank you for taking the time to correct my mistakes. It's help me

I read wrong sometimes, I'm not yet very fluent in English

Before discovering this clip (which suits my headlight), I attached with high temperature silicone. And it was good too

Thanks for the pictures Xavier; getting close but not quite. I have all the pieces shown in the photo of the pilot lamp. It's the retaining nut assembly in the bottom of the headlamp shell which holds the headlamp rim in place. I've looked at a couple of friends BMW's but they have different attachment methods.
Today I will try to sort out the wiring on this bike. So far I have a headlamp and rear signal lamps. So I still have to try to get working the front signals, horn and instrument lamps. Then try to stuff all this wiring into the headlamp shell and still have room for the headlamp!

Hi Dennis

Trying to stuff all this wiring Into the headlamp shell with Still Have room for the headlamp? I think you need to venture into after drinking a few beers

In France we say prise de t?te !

I sympathize. Courage !!!

Ah yes, that looks to be the piece. It looks like the bottom of the clip will fit into the slot at the bottom of the headlamp shell. I will try the BMW dealer to see if it is still available. Don't think I'll try to make one if I don't have to. Thanks all above for the help on this.

A picture speaks to me louder than words. I'm going to buy another dictionary "technical vocabulary"  :-X

I could do with one of those pilot light spring clip thingies.
Mine's held in with silver paper.

Works though !

The local BMW dealer wasn't able to source the ring mounting clip so I guess I will try to make one.

I used a Ducati Monster headlamp fitted in an original Laverda shell, dont remember much about the clip but it all went together well.
Regards Pat.

A friend of mine has a BMW /6 which uses the same device. I will try the local BMW dealer again now that I have more precise information. Otherwise I will try Motobins etc.
Thanks, Dennis

Hi Dennis,

I might have a spare one of these clips - chuck me a PM if you want it and I'll have a look when I get home.
