I've got a rattling in one of my mufflers and am wondering if the Jota mufflers are just std mufflers with the end baffles removed and replaced with a piece of larger dia. pipe? It looks easy enough to cut off the rolled edge of the end and remove the baffle. For the record my pipes were dented and had some pinholes that I fixed before I painted them black so I'm not really ruining anything by trying to gut them. Money spent on mufflers now would be better used on things like ignition and brake rotors. Any drawings/specs about for modifying stock mufflers?

Years ago, when I tried to convert a spare set of 3C mufflers into Jota boxes, we found that more was needed to remove the baffles than just cutting off the end section.

Those early mufflers (ie. the ones without the seams) are full of organ pipe baffles, and these are welded at a number of points in the muffler.  We needed to cut the boxes further down to get access to the weld points from two directions.  I can?t remember whether it would also have been necessary to cut them at the end sections, as we had already done so, but it did help with the outlet pipe changes.

The outlet pipes are normally 65mm long, of which 20mm projects on the outside.
The inner diameter of the outlet pipe is 32mm, although I think the original Slater pipes had a bigger outlet.  I had a set of Jota boxes custom made in stainless a few years ago with 35mm Ids and they work very well.

Not sure what sort of collector you are using, but if it?s still the one with the small  (one inch?) pipe, then you may wish to change it for the later collector with the bigger pipe.

Thanks for td one at that!he reply, from what I can see peering down the hole it looks like someone drove something down the outlet to open it up. That likely explains the rattle. I figured it wouldn't be simple [never is] and welding another seam at the other end shouldn't be too much of a bother. At worst it will come out looking like a loud, mangled breakfast sausage.
