Jota Noise

Gents,

OK what better noise could there be than a Jota at speed. But while lugging through traffic on the way home last weekend noticed what I thought to be a louder than normal whine. Only in gears 2 - 4 while lugging heavily down low. Its always had a small amount of this whine but seems to be more pronounced of late. Mine's done 140K klms ... still original pistons and bores ... have replaced the rings twice though.

At speed and revs it runs beautifully ... still good as new.

Any comments ... thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanx ... Steve

Thanks guys,
Yes I'm probably just getting old and the ears are playing tricks. The whine has always been there to a certain degree. Nothing like these new Triumphs or BMWs so I'm probably being paranoid.
The primary chain I replaced about 3K klms ago. Glued the jesus nut on with half a ton of loctite ... I've had it come loose before and flog out the crank spline, causing a major rebuild. I know this has been covered before but tensioning the primary chain. I dont like the method described in the green book where it says to hold the engine at revs and back off the adjuster until the whine disappears. Prefer to turn the back wheel to push all slack onto the lower side of the primary chain, tighten adjuster, then back off half a turn. Is half a turn consistent with what others are doing.
Thanx ... Steve
PS. Looking forward to the Brisbane Laverda Concourse on 12th August. Best bike show in QLD and the Lav Club here puts on a great day. Congrats to you guys.

I use Keiths formula of 1 1/2 turns out from tight when cold.
I have a play every now and then but it always goes back to where it came from.
Tension is always fine using this.

OK - for those of us with the mechanical sympathy of a headless chicken on acid, what is tight?

Is this "Tight using a socket on the end of a screwdriver like handle"?

Or "Tight using a 4 foot breaker bar"?

Or "Just nip it up - it's not tight really"?

Years of fiddling with old Jap bikes with iffy threads in cheap alloys has taught me feel when it comes to fasteners, but descriptions like this still leave me scratching my head. I dunno whether it's my aspergers but I'm always after a more precise definition of "tight".

2 ft.lb?

Keith posted a reply to a similar post from me last year.He said at the time that tight was achieved with a smooth handled screwdriver applied with an oily hand.He must have been using his Laverda clutch hand. What I ended up doing is applying the screwdiver quite hard, that tensions the chain. You do need to get past the slight resistance when it first touches the chain and give it some welly to take the slop out, don't go bust a gut though. Then you back it back.I then start it and have a listen,if it wines I back it off a bit.Be good to have this as a sticky or in the Wiki. Its hard to find via a search, end up doing that every time it comes up.
