JOTA paint

Thanks for all your support, unfortunately I have since discovered that the bike really is a Swiss market model.
That means that his Jota exhausts cannot be legally used in Germany (I think even if it was German market you would have problems here)
If I have understood the differences so far discussed, to bring it to anything like a satisfying spec, it would need at least the A11 cams, appropriate shims & re-jetting. (anything else ?)
If, as Slater suggested, the A11 is used with HC pistons one would have arguably the nicest road configuration.
However that was assuming the base model is german so A11 already present, (bigger valves ?) and exhaust port enlargement.
All in all it seems one would need to put an awful lot of expensive lipstick on this pig.

Do the current crop of UK Jotas belong to anyone here ?

@piet could one get a UK JOTA without mods stra?enzugelassen ?

the route with a modified originally german 3CL plus goodies would cost as much if not more than this already is, looking at the prices being demanded currently.
The big selling point of this was seemingly excellent condition and genuine low miles, another one bites the dust !
I think the price he wants, assuming it was not swiss, is not unreasonable ?

Maybe Slater only has A11s in stock?
My personal preference is 4C cams whether 1000 or especially 1200.
Just gives it more urgency at higher revs. And I don't notice any shortfall at lower revs either.
The hot ticket these days is F1 grind cams (as used in RGS) but configured for 180? triples.
Keith in Laverda Scozia has them manufactured.

How intrusive is the German inspection? Inside the engine? Surely not. Why not just fit the quiet silencers for inspection and swap for whatever you want the rest of the time?

Buy the Swiss spec bike, fit A11, 4C or F1 cams, get it registered and then fit the loud pipes.

that could perhaps be the case but i was clear from the start I was buying from Wagner, and was just seeking another opinion before i commit myself to buy the most expensive thing in my life ever other than a house ! My personal preference would be the full jota spec, but I am not sure that would even be possible with these swiss heads and how significant the smaller valves are.
If the test is done properly they know what the difference is I would need effectively a forged document from an authorised person  to say it was all swiss spec, and I would not put someone in that position. On another bike I have Contis, not really allowed but are in the documentation with a caveat, but the caveat was never fulfilled.
The police regularly stop bikes and make detailed roadside checks and they are not wet behind the ears. I usually avoid those type of roads now and touch wood.

To do as you suggest would put too much additional cost on top in my opinion, unless the price was dropped. I will speak to him and see how far his claimed willingness to negotiate extends. Those chrome covers are bad enough but CH provenance is the killer.

I would however be interested to hear your opinions of how this small valve head would affect performance and what EXACTLY must one calculate for in installing an A11

Easier to look for the spec bike you want than mess around making this one how you want it/are allowed to change it.

Fat chance... unless the inspector is your brother, son, etc.

Simple, just check the dB limits applicable at the time of manufacture and compare to what Jota pipes spit out, must be about 20dB difference.  Please consider, an increase of 3dB effectively doubles sound pressure level, so, roughly 128 times as loud as allowed.

The "Jota" valve sizes and exhaust port enlargement have negligable effect on performance, a blind alley the factory entred, imho.  The 120?  engines reverted to the earlier exhaust valve size, 35mm, the 1000SFC even went down to 34mm, with 39.5 and 40.5 inlet valves respectively.

Just jam some metal fly screen down there and get it ink pelted and rip it out afterwards.
I've used all concoctions of screen wire in the past and even had a z900 with 4 into one with no baffle sound like a gold wing for inspections. 10 mins later it was back to its unabashed self.

Been there, done it, got the t-shirt summons... :o

Over here, bikes like that can get you searching for another mode of travel from some remote place far from home, if the cops don't concur with your taste concerning motorcycle sound emissions.  They are generally quite open-minded these days when confronted with a rorty old classic, but I well remember the days when Laverda triples had not yet reached this status.

These days, I'm far more concerned with keeping the peace with my neighbours than pleasing the law enforcement department.
