A friends trying to fit his Jota pipes to his Jota but the silencers look too swept up and the rubber mounts therefore are twisting out and not flush, brackets are the triangular type can anyone tell me where he is going wrong? As a 120 owner mine are obviously underslung :o

Tail pipes are the same 180 or 120 but IIRC the front pipes and the collector are different.

LJ, has this bike ever been down the road? If one of the frame (tube) triangles has been bent inwards, you can get a similar overall effect. (sounds wrong I know, but can be true, because of the exhaust joint angles). P.

Perhaps the collector not pushed onto the headers all the way?  Or the "silencers" not all the way on the collector?  Headers longer than standard?  Headers not bolted squarely to the head?

All this would push them rearwards and consequently upwards at the ends.

Paul maybe see you when I collect my tank.Have a good trip.

I never had much trouble getting my 3c exhaust to go back together easily, but the Keihan system on my 3cl/Jota is a source of misery to me. The only way I get it anywhere near right is to first attach the mufflers to the rubber mounts, then install the collector loosely, then install the downpipes loosely between the head and the collector. Then I slowly tighten the nuts at the exhaust ports while wiggling the collector to avoid strains building up. When the headers are pretty much installed I finally begin to tighten the bolts to the captive nuts at front and back of the collector.
A Jota system with loose (that is, unattached) clamps is considerably more forgiving, but if the collector is misaligned the mufflers will never be right. Try loosening the clamps at the front and rear of the collector and jiggling the whole system to be sure that it's sitting in an aligned position.
If all else fails, you may just have to remove and reinstall the system like I have to do with my Keihan. It does get easier with practice. A hydraulic bike stand does help so you're not working at floor level so much.

Are the 3 downpipes in the right order in the collector?
Can put incredible strain on the system, leading to cracked collector and skewed location of silencer mounts, among other things.

Ken,

Reckon the Keihan systems are mostly hand-built, and as such, slight mis-alignment issues might well creep in.  I have found that as long as stock headers are retained, the remaining system can be lined up quite easily, with any after-market collector and silencers.  Seems the header bend to the most important bit, once that is off even by a few mm, all else just won't line up correctly.

Have a similar problem on my own RGS, stainless headers with the stock collector and stainless silencers.  The collector now has a slight downwards slant that allows the silencers to clash with the centre stand.

Exactly what I was going to recommend. Loosly mount the mufflers and work forward - will make it more evident where the misalignment is occuring.
