just barely a Laverda?

The Cali 1100 has a longer swing arm than other Guzzi models like 1100 Sport or Daytona.

The swingarm on the Daytona and Sport 1100 and the V11's are too short. So many racers spend money getting longer swingarms so that the bike will handle better. The later CARC bikes and the MGS-01 have considerably longer swingarms and they are certainly not lazy handling bikes. Gives the bike a considerably better weight bias as well.

Longer swing arms allied to shorter wheelbase is good.
With a fixed length for the engine and transmission the front fork angle seems to be the main area to achieve this.

"Just barely a Laverda?" Quite a few of the fastest most successful racing Laverdas could well come under that banner.

Too true, fratello! I'm glad to hear that decreasing head angle and increasing swingarm length produces sweeter handling and a better weight bias - exactly what and why I've done the same to the SFQ - plus 17 inch wheels.
