£82 better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, I watched it count down to zero seconds and it stayed at 68, when the page refreshed it had sold for 82, is that one of those auto bidding programs I've heard about ?

Yep. They're great when you can't be there to bid. Come home from a weekend away and find you've won an auction.

Unless you get caught in an auto bid war with another auto bidder. You wanna be sure you’re happy with the upper limit you set. I prefer to do my own bidding in the final 15 seconds.

No way! If you’re happy with the autobid limit then leave it alone! The last 15seconds is when I’m most likely to say “ahh fuck it, just one more bid!”
(or “one more stroke”, hence fatherhood…🤣)

I love a last second bid myself, had it down to about 8 seconds to get it in at the last microsecond...'confirm bid' ...'OK' ....but then occasionally confuddled by a 'Sign in' page, and all is lost :o

Ha ha. I've tried that and lost on too many occasions. I came to the conclusion that people who put in a last minute manual bid are called losers. That's why I started using sniper software. The one I use is EZ Sniper https://www.ezsniper.com/
I think it's free or costs a very small amount (a few cents) per snipe. It's dead simple to use.

Manual bids will always lose out against an automatic ebay sniper bid with a higher limit. The sniper software puts the bid in during the last fraction of a second leaving no time for anyone else to get another bid in. I dunno what happens if two bidders are using sniper software on the same Item. I suppose the one with the higher bid limit gets it.
I've used sniper software on several occasions when it was something I really needed. Some folks consider it cheating, but if other bidders are doing it, then why not level the playing field? Otherwise it's like taking a knife to a gun fight.

Besides, it's useful if you can't be sitting at your computer when the bidding ends. Say at 3am when your busy pushing out zzzz's (or having sex), or in the middle of the day when you're at a high-powered business meeting solving global warming, coming up with a cure for cancer, or sorting out the Middle East crisis. Or maybe all three. :)

I would liken it more to fishermen who spend hundred or thousands on electronic equipment and gear to outsmart a fish while they snooze, is it cheating ? I don't know but definitely unsporting.

You set your upper limit - if it comes in below, you're happy, if it comes in at max bid, you're happy, if you are outbid and don't get it you're not happy, but content in the knowledge that it went for more than you were willing to pay.

Bugger sitting and sweating at the keyboard only to bomb out due to a slow computer or whatever!

The easiest stuff to buy are things that are wrongly listed. I was looking for a Honda CB160 K0 petrol tank recently, hens teeth in the UK at least but there was a brand new one listed as being for a Honda CB72. No bidders except me ;)
