The only other irk with my Mirage is that the gearchange between first and second is poor, the rest are super slick and a joy to carry out. Is there any adjustment internally or do i just need to keep playing with level position and footrest position to see if i can improve it. Cheers for your patience, Ian
 
yes ... as per the workshop manual, there is internal adjustment. I've just re-installed my selector(s) and adjusted the cammed screw that aligns the selector tooth. I've no access to pics or resources atm. but I'm sure someone will help.

I've not yet ridden the bike but I found that the adjustment can be fiddly ... so keep checking the setting by running the gear selector / rear wheel by hand.

Also the tension spring (on mine) was interfering with the mechanism, causing similar symptoms as yours ... worth a look.

I'm going to have to question my own post here ... although I posted the manuals gear selector adjustment spindle (attachment) I see that it shows 5 'pins' on the 'change' spindle whereas my bike has only 4 'pins'.

Last time out gears 1 - 5 seemed OK but heading home I could't find 1 - 2 ....

The question is "should there actually be 5 pins"?

That might explain a lot!

I picked up a Mirage which had been laid up for quite some time. First ride out and there was no top gear. After a lot of adjusting with no success I found that one of those pins was missing.

thanks .. the plot thickens, I can't see how it would not be there (and must be pressed in) I'm guessing mine's never been there! Could the drawing be wrong?

Scrumpy - fixed it? No problems after that?
 
More on the manual ... anyone know if the alignment marks are meant to be 'neutral'?

Mine around aligned but not as horizontal.

4 Pins in the selector on my Drummer. To add to the confusion it also had an extra scribe mark on the circumference.

There are only 4 pins that drawing is not correct, the first pin is pushed for first and pulled for second and of course neutral sits in between, set the position of the fork in the neutral position.
Don't be alarmed if you cant get it centred by adjusting the eccentric screw.
Use some creativity to fine tune the fork centre position.
 
Had same issues with my 74 3c; took a lot off fine tuning with the adjuster and also loosened of the bolts in the inner cover so they where just tight enough to stop oil wepping out.Found that made a huge difference. Cheers
 
You don't need to leave the screws for the cover 'loose' - just loosen, tap cover to where selector pin shaft slides in and out to engage easily with the internal gear, then tighten properly - and check for easy fit with as little play as possible.
Often find the big spring can interfere (get pinched between eccentric stop screw and fork).
