Laverda 100 chains

There have been some problems with this product and it is all very simple really. There are only 2 1/2" x 1/4" made......110044 or equivalent or 420.

I once fitted a chain to a members 100 and took the 2 possible choices, I was surprised when it turned out to be an old UK spec 1/2"  x  1/4", Renold number 110044. Renold stopped production of this some time ago and although Regina do an exact replacement all the Bantam, Cub and Villiers guys panicked. Some person then did a wrap round with 420 and found it fiited and even the owners clubs started using the 420 ref as gospel.

Even sprocket manufacturers joine in and if you ask for a Bantam sprocket from an aftermarket sprocket manufacturer you will be more than likely to get 420.

Below I list the dimensions and see if you can spot the critical difference.

110044

Pitch.............................12.7mm
Inner width (Roller width)......6.4mm
Roller dia...........................8.51mm

420

Pitch.............................12.7mm
Inner width.....................6.4mm
Roller dia........................7.75mm

Yes the 420 will go on the 110044 sprockets but not visa versa, but the wear rate will be horrendous. If you have an original rear sprocket but a new 420 front then problems. Bantam and Cub owners have been having all sorts of problems for years now.

As for asa standard chain, that has to my knowledge never been made in this size but even then it has yet a different roller dia at7.94mm.

Hope this helps

Andy

Andy thank you.Of course, that all went right past me. :o
However, it does leave me with a question; will a 520 chain work on a mirage? Of course with the correct sprockets. :D

So, Andy, on this side of the world (NZ) where regina is priced like buying gold dust, I should make up new motor and clutch sprockets for my Rudge project so as to use readily available 420.....
Alas rules prohibit a belt primary.

G'day Myke

The short answer is yes.

The more detailed answer is that the 520 sprocket is thinner than the 530 (or 630) which messes up the alignment between front and rear sprockets. Easiest fix is a 1/8" thick spacer between the rear sprocket and the wheel hub. It's also a good idea to put a spacer behind the front sprocket too. It's not needed for alignment purposes (the retaining plate holds the sprocket in place), but a it will fill in the gap between the sprocket and seal, and help keep dirt out of the seal.

Cheers,
Cam

The standard trick here is to take a 530 gearbox sprocket and machine the inside face back so the sprocket ends up with an offset 520 width. No need for a spacer.
Also when machining the rear wheel sprocket carrier it means I am able to run a custom 520 sprocket with no spacer. Straight run.

520 will work no probs but why? If you want to save some weight for racing OK but for normal road use there is little point, in fact 520 has a smaller bearing area than 530 so will wear quicker.

Greg

420 is fine if you use common sprockets, most 420 chains are of dubious quality but if you have an iwis agent over there ask for iwis S84V which is a bullet proof item, having said that also watch the width cos a lot of 420 chains are quite wide. The iwis width is 6.4mm.

Cam, thanks . That does make sense.

Andy, I have had the impression from tuners here in the States, that a smaller chain used LESS HP to rotate than a heavier chain and in fact because of the weight actually wears out quicker. I recently installed a 520 on my Triumph Thruxton and seat of the pants, the motor appears to rev a little quicker. Is this just wishful thinking on my part?
I notice that all the big hoursepower bikes like the ZX 14 are using a 520 chain so i was wondering if the stock Laverda chain is a bit of overkill.

Any O ring chain will take bhp from the motor, a good non O ring like I think Vince is using in oz give very little loss infact even against belts chain the the most efficient way to transmit power.

The only problem with non O ring is they need maintaining, a good chain boiled in wax every month will out last a O ring.

I am now going to eat me curry and cover my head to avoid the oncoming flack :D :D :D :D :D

A Vindaloo and a few pints of cider, that should give the household something to talk about in the morning Andy.
