Laverda 100: piston to bore clearance

Hi there,

the cylinder of my Laverda needs to be honed a little. I would also like to have the piston coated. Unfortunately, I can't find any information on the piston to bore clearance. Does anyone from the forum have any additional information?

I should think that the mechanics on this forum will soon step in. Clearances on these old engines are pretty standard.
Why are you honing the bore? If it's just a light hone, don't worry about it.
What clearances are you starting off with?
Why do you want to coat the piston and what with?

There's nothing relating to piston clearance in the Uso e manutenzione manual. It's a very basic opus for the non initiated.

Thank you for your ideas. I can’t measure the clearance, Paul, I agree with your thoughts: the coating is only nessesary, if the clearance after the light hone is to much. I have to talk with my mechanic…

Hi Michael,
Your mechanic will measure bore and piston, so you'll have the clearance.
If the clearance is too much, you need a rebore, not a coating.
I still don't know why you want to hone?

Hi Paul,
I would like to have the cylinder honed because there are slight marks in the running surface. The mechanics should remove as little material as possible so that the cylinder running surface is ok again. Then the question is whether the piston running clearance is still ok. As the piston is apparently OK, coating the piston would be one way of restoring the piston running clearance accordingly.
The classic method would of course be an oversize piston ....

Coatings will be so thin you will obtain virtually no increase in piston size. On a 100cc bike I'm not sure anything other than a rebore to restore a scored bore would do. But your call.
 
If the steel of the cylinder sleeve is simply stained due to not be used for a long time, there's nothing wrong with it, use it as it is.
If it's marked as in "a thumbnail can feel it". Rebore it.
