The writers of Star Wars didn't know what a parsec was. They rather famously mistook it for a unit of time. When it was pointed out to them by nerdy fans that it's a measure of distance, rather than say, "OK, we fucked up", they wrapped an unlikely back-story around it in an attempt to save face.
Vince. You know as well as I do that warp factor is a fictional unit of speed, not distance.
