Laverda 500 piston clearance

Hi all,

It looks I will have a complete Laverda 500 soon (without documents) to have plenty of parts to play with, among them a cylinder head! So I can try a full rebuild without risking mine. When I am on it, I will revive the thread...:p

Unfortunately, this laverda500 comes together with a Ducati Darmah 900 SD 🤪 I could not buy it alone, it had to be in that batch. And my wife is not reading this forum, so believe it or not, but it is true! Photos of the Darmah below, needs restoration but it runs well already, and it is the 4th Darmah that came out of the production line!

Ok, let's go to the point. I have been looking through the manual but I can't find it. What should be the tolerance Piston vs liner on the Laverda 500?? same as the triples? 0,070-0,098??

Regards,
Miguel

what, on offers to buy the Darmah? 😛
BTW, are the 500 engines you mentioned still available?
Hi Andy!

I have the lower part of a Laverda 500 engine, complete only missing barrel and head.
Next week I will have a complete engine, will only keep the head for me.
The rest of the engines will be available.

Now I kind of like the Darmah, i think I will keep it. Unfortunately in Ducatis no so nice forum like this one… (that I could find)

See Page 45/46: 500 repair manual

Ok, i see what you mean, I was confused because if you read the text it does not reference the 0,7/0,8, only the maximum permissible.
So I understand that the clearance should be between 0’7 and 0’8?

And now the stupid question… this is in total? I mean if I meassure piston diameter and bore diameter I should get double this amount? Or exactly this 0’7 so the clearance around the piston is half of it all around? 😅 I am not doing it myself is just for learning…

Regards and happy new year!

the clearance should be tight enough to make it run well and loose enough to prevent it not running well.

Yes , total clearance. Measurement of bore minus measurement of piston = clearance. Measured at the piston's widest point.

you are missing a decimal point, giving a piston 0.7-0.8mm clearance is going to make for a very noisy and smokey engine
correct measurement should be 0.07-0.08mm, total not per side
