Laverda 500 valve seals

Hi all!

Already overhauling my 500 engine. I am struggling to know what parts i can find and which ones not. I would like to do a complete overhaul of the cylinder head, but don’t know how far I will get…

1- are the valve seals special for laverda? Or are they a kind of standard seals that I can find in any engineering shop? If that’s the case, somebody knows the specifications?

2- I would like to change the cam end bushes, one of them is very bad. I couldn’t find yet any soares of that. But it doesn’t seem a complicated bush to do… do you think a good turner could do them?

Regards,
Miguel

What do the camshaft ends look like? The ones on my wife's 500 were heavily marked. That involved turning down, pressing on a hard steel bush and of course new bushes. It is however an early engine with needle roller cam ends, originally.

End of camshaft are good. And meassure ok, within specs… only the aluminium bushes are bad.
Red don’t have anymore… still looking if somebody has a few. Otherwise I will try to make them.

I think that I got the last from Red. Shouldn't be too difficult to make though. Why are they so badly scored? How are the centre bearings?

Don’t know why but your message was sent twice.

Unfortunately Red hasn’t got anymore, but the guy from Lebocoin answered and i bought them already! Now I am just missing the valve seals… i think red has some, but shipping from Austrlia just for this… i will try first in Europe.

Any idea if I can use a sort of standard seals?

If I could find valves and guides, I will consider a full rebuild! At least now I know it can work again

The cam ends are good, only the one from the scored bush has some marks… but doesn’t look bad to me. Central bearing tolerances look good as well.

THANK YOU!
I have written him and another guy selling some other spares of 500…
He didn’t have a number… if he doesn’t answer, somebody would be happy to buy them in france and resend them to me? I cannot “buy now” out of france…
Regards,
Miguel
If you don't get an answer Miguel, let Dude know and he'll get them for you.
I can translate if need be.

My messages sometimes appear twice because I need several tries to connect and post and it seems that I have several copies of the forum running together.
You'll no doubt find the valve stem seals in Europe. Gijs van Dijk got seals from an Alfa 14 or 15 years ago because 500 seals were already unobtainable. I seem to remember that Wolfgang was having some made.

Paul

If you mean 'Valve Stem Seals' try OCT or Wolfgang they had a load re-made.
Thank you. I have already found the cam bushes and valve stem seals (thanks to this forum). That will be enough to make it run again. It will take some time until I find rest of parts for a full head rebuild. I will get them slowly and do the rebuild in a few thousend kilometers…

The engine will have new pistons and Redax ignition😎

I post some photos of the condition of the shaft and head after cleaning. Is not perfect, but reasonable. I think one valve seat had been replaced and maybe a crack welded…?

Hi Paul!

My telephone camera is very dramatic, she is too good and takes every detail. But yes, the center cam bearing has seen better times, but what can I do anyway…? If somebody can offer a camshaft, I would be happy to take it, but I guess this is rather difficult, now I understand why everybody warned me about buying the 500🤔 but is so nice…

Yes, it has a valve seat repaired, and some welding, but the repair looks consistent. I sold to Wolfang a couple of months ago a NOS 500 cylinder head, i deeply regret 😩
