Good evening All!

Newbie Laverda owner. I have just bought a Laverda Alpino S, 1978, only done 4500. Wanted na SF2/3 but I'm a little on the short side. This became available. Rec'd it yesterday, however she won't start. Have drained old fuel. New spark plugs. Blown out jets. Trickle charge battery, but new gel one on the way. Checked carb pipes. Checked fuel flowing from tank. Managed to get a mere 5 seconds from her today. We are thinking it's a fueling issue, and maybe carbs need fettling. Carbs were refurbed in 2014, and bike had only done 200 miles since then, and probably spent past 18 months sitting quietly in a garage.
I am thinking of taking carbs off tomorrow and sending them away to be, at least, checked for blockages. Any other bright ideas? Thanks Becky

Hi
Any bike left standing for over five years will need a carb strip and clean. You'll also need to drain the tank and swill it out with fresh fuel, checking the taps whilst your at it. Sadly, modern fuels absorb water and leave crud as it evaporates. If you managed to some life out of it you'll soon sort it. Any help you need, this is the place. Good luck.

I know little of 500s but, if they're anything like their larger siblings, there's a particular starting technique, from cold.
Might be worth a try.
(Assuming you've checked fuel, spark and compression, and have all three.)
Fuel, on.
Starter enrichment (often mis-called "Choke"), on.
Throttle, closed.
Push starter button.
Once it catches, open throttle and take the starter enrichment back towards 'off'.
If it begins to die, you may have to maintain partial enrichment for a moment before returning to 'off'.

Before you remove the carbies remove a spark plug earth it and crank to see if there is spark, original ignition?? This may not be your friend.

No, Mate, it's a four valve pushrod Weslake. Photo taken about forty years ago, when I could get out of an armchair without groaning. Happy days.

Hi Becky,
I would check all the wiring to and from the coils especially any contacts. Also make sure you have a good earth.
Secondly check out the wiring from the ignition pickups behind the left hand cover held on by three small cap heads. From there the four wires come out and go under the engine to a 4 pin connector. The wires should be in a sheathing , ,pull the sheathing away as much as possible and inspect the state of the individual wires. Due to age/heat cycles the sheathing goes hard and breaks off, thus leaving exposed wires.
