Laverda drum info

Have the rear drum off the SF1 for inspection and cleaning, and have a set of new shoes from Wolfgang which I was planning to fit. The old and new shoes are fitting tight enough at pivot/rotate end, but at the end which the lever movement pushes them out the fit of the shoes bush over the pin is quite loose - see pin circled in picture. The new ones are actually looser than the old and it appears this looseness is intended - can't see signs of excessive wear to the pin that would cause this amount of loose. Is this normal? Or do I need to order new pins/links.

The shoes should be bushed on the link end. The bushes should be a tight fit in the shoes.

Thanks. The ones which are fitted to the bike have a bush at each end. The new ones have a bush only on the link end, the pivot end has no bush and is a tight fit. The link end has a bush but it's slacker than the old shoe. I'll drop Wolfgang a mail and ask him to check

It seems the bushes at the link end of my new shoes are larger internal diameter than the shoes on the bike, and also the link-pin. So in order to fit these shoes I need to remove their bushes and replace with smaller ID bushes. Has anyone else been down this road, or able to offer somewhere to buy the bushes - the usual Lav suppliers don't list them, but I'd expect/hope their must be a supplier of generic/custom bushes out there somewhere.

Thanks Paul,
But looking at AW’s site the only bushes I could see are the ones for the eccentric spindles, it seems the bushes on the shoes are not listed and I couldn’t see them on AW’s exploded diagrams. I’ve just spotted the recent thread about getting shoes reclined, I should have opted for a reline rather than new shoes. I’ll throw it together for Willersey ( it’s just a rear) and take the wheel and brake up to Classic Brakes next week, sounds like they will fit oversize linings, check the drum for round, and machine linings to fit the drum. There’s not much play in the original bush, it’s the lining that’s past it. Hopefully!

Paul, did you mean simple to make one? If so, how easy is that to do for someone who hasn’t used a lathe. Must be quite satisfying to do.

Easy for some one who can use a lathe, a drill and a reamer.
Beyond me personally but plenty of people out there who can.

Ah, that kind of easy. I’ve found a place which has a bush that might fit in place of the oversized ones on the new shoes.

Hi, as you mentioned that the original bush ( in the warn out shoe) is a good , ID etc.
Could you not push that out in a vise with a suitabley sized socket or round drift?
Nothing lost. And reuse it in the new shoe. Adding heat or cooling if needed.
Not sure if this is bad practice, but someone might tell us.

Thanks Ian. I’m kind of working along those lines. I want to use the bike this weekend for Willersey, and am okay to ride a few 100 miles with a crap rear brake. Then I’ll see about getting the shoes relined and centred in the drum, and will do front at same time. I’m doing a 2k mile trip to Spain in October and need good brakes for that.

As an aside, I removed the drum from my other bike, a GTL, to compare. I’ve owned since new so know the brakes are original. The GTL and new shoes from Wolfgang are the same in that they have a bush only at the link end, same as photo by Sock on here, where the SF1 shoes (multiple owners before me) has a bush at each end. I’m thinking that a previous owner has fitted bushes rather than replace link pin.
