I sit here in absolute astonishment that this starter button crap has reared its head once again!!

I think Tippie's bicycle freewheel analogy spells it out better than anything else (and not just because he's mein bruder - it's dead right and made me laugh!)

Ron, is there a little eentsy chance that the other issue you often mention of rivets coming loose on your starter clutch housing may have preceded the extermination of your starter motor, but you weren't aware of it? You were ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that your wayward thumb hit that button, right when things went to shaeze, eh?

And actually Rob - I'VE blown a starter to bits ... perfectly good one, which had done about 200,000km trouble free. When I was working at Bruce's I decided to fit a new starter sprocket and didn't know back then that a minimum of 1-2mm sideplay is absolutely essential - the starter started the motor, the motor grabbed the starter clutch and - BINGO! One starter that looked like Paul's did one sad, soggy morning.

Got a new starter, machined a bit off the sprocket and it's probably done another 160,000km at least. I've never heard of anyone else blowing one, but I bought one for parts that had, so it does happen and the reason is almost invariably the starter clutch being given a bear hug by the motor - but NOT BECAUSE THE OWNER HIT THE STARTER BUTTON WHEN THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING! It's becoming about as exciting as a Mills & Boon this fukn subject.

I've seen a few blown starters, Bosch, SJCE and ND. In ALL cases, a jammed starter clutch was the culprit.

The starter clutches usually give early enough warnings that things are amiss, by slipping and/or emitting screeching/grating sounds. Incorrect assembly or lack of maintenance are possible causes. Ignoring these signals will turn costly sooner or later... usually a lot sooner than anticipated. :rolleyes:

There’s some excellent information on this thread, as well as some nuggets of sage advice from trusted sources. I hope the OP got what he needed before it wandered 🤣
P.S. How are we going with developing an “edit” function for the app 🤔
 
I have never blown one up, but have had fail to work plenty of times. Even a few after paying for a rebuild. The bloody Pantah one needs half the engine pulled down to access ONE of the 2 mounting bolts, at least the Laverda one comes off easy.
