Hi There,
I recently purchased a regulator on ebay for my sf2 it can from a firm in Italy called Brixiamoto  srl as any body else had experience with fitting one of these as only one terminal is marked as D+ the other terminals are blank ? I have spoken to the firm that make these regulators but i am still waiting for a answer.
Regards Les Allen.

I fitted a 12V Volksy one and immediately my genny burned out - I'm not up on auto elec stuff much, and have no idea why it happened, but I ended up buying one through the same auto electrician with the original Lav/Bosch part number and it cost about 3 times as much. It has the white porcelain thing underneath.

FFS, I knew I'd forgotten to do something today!

Soory for the delay Les, you can go to bed now!

is there a more modern compact regulator that can be used on the 750 set up ?
anyone found something that works

I have found this one to work perfectly, doesn't really require the flex mounts either.

The Kleiber item is a lot smaller and works just as well, need to get the correct one for the application though.

I have a Sachse one on my roadbike. Has done a season and a half and seems to be fine. I have one of those battery monitor diode lights that shows the state of charge to keep track of things. The Sachse is tiny and can be adjusted for max output voltage.

Yep second that one , have a sachse 5a on my 750 no dramas in the 2yrs ive run it  ;)

should have added cheap to that statement as well  :D

will buy 3 x Sachse units
thanks

Tippie, I am talking to a guy who does improvements to the generators increasing their outputs, and he has a solid state regulator to control it. Waiting to hear back on the cost of the regulator (he says he can put it in the original can to keep it looking original).

Clay, the last time I had my regulator set up was by a marine electrician who said, when I turned up with the regulator, that he needed the genny it regulates to set it up to. No previous elect who had done it had said that and it hadn?t been doing it?s job. When I picked it up he asked all about the bike etc as it was pretty unusual for a bike setup, and said that he pulled 22 amps out of the genny under test, said it was same as a VW one but didn?t have the air cutouts for cooling, thus the 11 amp rating. That reg kept things perfect for 15 years until I swapped it for the Sachse as I was tidying things up and the Sachse is so small and had such good reviews. Not sure what your mate does with them but the std genny does seem up to the task. Ciao. Lee

Tippie, not sure either. The conversation started out because he converts generators to alternators using the existing casing and he guts it then installs his alternator conversion inside so it still looks like the original. I have to measure the diameter of mine to see if it is big enough to convert (I don't think it is). Once I get the info I'll let ya'll know.

Just wondering why its so difficult to obtain a suitable regulator.

Is it  because the generator produces too much current or the sine wave is not so stable as from an alternator?
Just trying to understand the theory ,if someone can explain that be great.

Andy

Yeah Clay, an alternator produces current from the start whereas the dc generator needs a few revs before it gives anything useful. Alternators are also usually three phases which seems to help. I am ok with the electron theory basics but no expert.
Kermit the Lav dc genny shouldn?t produce a sine wave, isn?t that the domain of alternating current? The problem with the regulators (don?t need to rectify) is that not all car ones seem robust enough for an SF, or at least it seems like that to me. I used several suited to VW and though they did the job, the overcharge resistor failed on each of them on long high speed rides. The only diff I could see was that this part is a robust thing on the original device and a flimsy wound wire on the others. The original part is deadly expensive so people try alternatices. It seems like a few solid state ones are available now.

Tippie, the constant voltage at low RPM's is one of the advantages, but they are a lot lighter too (doubt it will be much lighter if we still use the original casing). The three phases smooth out the pulses of the AC signal with the diodes by increasing the frequency and then shunting the AC to ground through a capacitor, but the simplicity of a generator has it's advantages too but weight is not one of them. We'll have to see what solutions we can come up with to make power generation better while keeping the "original" look. The solid state regulator should help too, but we'll see.

Clay

I will soon have a test bench so I can test my genny and both my old regulator and the new solid state one I have. It's the same as the one rowdy pat posted a picture of. I'll post the results in a few weeks
