Leaking oilfilter gasket sf

Hello everyone, having no experience posting questions on this forum, I just burst in with one:
How to make the oilfilter/oildrain gasket on a 750 oil tight?
Used new gasket, no siliconesealant (for obvious reasons), copper washers, dome shaped nuts, but to no avail, on both my Laverdas. Where do I go wrong? Cheers Joost
 
Fit a new filter plate, the originals are quite weak and are often distorted/warped, not to mention the damage and crumbling at the stud bores. While originals are still available, aftermarket billet items are far stronger and are generally oil tight... given your sealing surface on the crankcase is OK.

Copper washers and dome nuts are not necessary if all is in good shape. Most probably the plates have been distorted through over-tightening, squashing the gasket in the process. It then starts leaking and the nuts are done up even tighter, further squashing the gasket, a never-ending circle of grief.

Thanks Piet for your swift reply. Don‘t think I put to much stress on the nuts, not after all rhe helicoil repairs I had to do on my Japanese bikes (some 35 years ago). But maybe the former owner(s) did. The threads in Laverda‘s aluminium are fine, after 54 years! Where can I purchase the replica filterplate? Still using the charming wire mesh filter? Thanks again and I will refrain from asking questions for now, although I have quite a lot…

Yes, they all use the stock mesh strainer. Nothing wrong with that, just change your oil at the specified intervals.

I purchased a billet sump cover w/ magnetic drain bolt from DAM Classic Racing in Australia and it fits perfectly w/ no leaks and allows for easier oil changes.
