light weight tank

I have just stripped 3 series 1 1000cc tanks tanks for repainting over the last month and one tank in particular is very light, this particular tank is made from a much lighter guage of steel and is very original under the paint it is without doubt factory made we had to do a small amount of metal finishing but found the tank so thin that is was very difficult to straighten in one area.
I wonder has any body else had a light weight tank like this or whether the factory may have made light weight tanks for racing????

I will weigh it and a standard tank tomorrow to see the difference.

yes, I am. if it is lighter than original? Lighter steel was not invented until today. Or just 0,5 mm material???

I don't think that the bottom line is, that a thinner sheet metal is beneficial for racing machines.

The risk of cracks or a leak in the event of a slight fall, would be too great for me.

Maybe the material in normal thicknes went out. Maybe there was a finance-problem at that time, so they used thinner material that was on stock or from the agriculture-production.

Its steel not aluminium, must have had a shortage of the correct gauge sheet on the day me thinks???

I have one that is lightweight too. I cut the bottom out of it to get at some pesky dings, and my TIG welding man complained how thin it was when sticking it back together. The centre seem weld is a thing of beauty though.
