Loctite for Exhaust Shield

Looks like I almost lost the exhaust headers shield from my Atlas. Not good as it wouldn't be easy to replace. So It looks like the fixing bolts need loctiting but I thought heat was how you released loctited bolts. Has anyone used a thread locker that would handle typical exhaust header temps so I don't lose any more bolts?

Kinda hard with the non-snag Mushroom heads I want to use. Google reveals all, very high temp theadlockers are about but there are only 2 local Engineering shops and where they stock this isn't likely.

What if you used a small punch to slightly deform the thread on the bolt where it just enters the threaded bore? All you need is a bit of extra friction…..

This is a bit tricky as that guard needs to come off when disassembling the exhaust system. BTW for a bike with a balance shaft, its already lost two bits on limited riding. This bolt and a footpeg rubber insert that bolts on and covers the serrated footpegs. I am thinking Loctite will be my friend here. Spring washer or Star washer. Good idea

Modern exhaust heat shields, think scooter, have a bolt with a flat washer, and a compressible fibre washer, seems to work ok. I would go with Maurice's suggestion, maybe shnoor washers, or those nice grooved serrated washers that Moto Guzzi use

I have no idea what that is so I did some Googling and what I got was Nord Washers, and they better be good at $11 each for M6 ones. But to be honest, replacing a missing Mal Cox exhaust shield would be an expensive nightmare.

Same thing Vince

Good shit.

A Schnorr washer is just single dished washer serrated on both sides, Nordlock is a two part washer serrated on the inside of both surfaces only.

i got schnoor washers in M6 and M8 (in HD and std) from a joint in Qld, Vince. I love 'em. if you've ever unbolted a Brembo rotor from its alloy carrier you'll find them under the M6 bolt heads.

Ah fuck, I thought they were one and the same. That’s the second mistake I’ve made in a couple of days.

Vince, re cost. Imagine how much time it would take someone to file all those little teeth? One angle wrong and, in the bin start again.
