Loose fitting exhaust balance pipe

How do I get a tight fit between the exhaust pipe and the balance pipe?
The balance pipe is a lose fitting and the drawing does not show any clamps.

The balance pipe would come loose and fall open on my 750 Bonnie and lose power. Annoying when it would happen mid-ride. I never fixed it before the bike was stolen never to be seen again. The geometry was crap on that Bonnie, you needed to crab both pipes together and back into the head at the same time, an ugly way to do it as the soft hammer was the only way to proceed. I should have used some wet and dry to clean off the carbon but never got to it.
 
Mine was rattling and chuffing, so I sleeved the joints with a strip of 0.127mm 0.005”/ 5" Thou stainless steel shim stock. I bought a small sheet on fleabay and it tightened up the joint nicely..

If time is of the escence, food tins from the pantry can offer up some useful thin material. That can of cocunut milk with a best-before date of August 2014 might come in useful after all....

I did consider tin can or a coke tin but could see the mix of metals corroding and welding up with exhaust heat and moisture so went with stainless just in case.
 
I now have shimed the balans pipe with a smal strip of heat resistent aluminum tape and some exhaust putty.
Seems to have become a close fit so we will see when its time for start up :)
