Lost Motor Vehicle Title

This is a USA based question.

Has anyone used an on line title search company that claims they can obtain a lost title for a vehicle?

Seems to me what they do is register the vehicle in a state (like Vermont) that doesn't require a vehicle Title to be presented. Once a registration and tag(license plate) is issued, they send it to you so you can present it to your DMV in your state. They claim the DMV in your state will at that point issue a title.

I'm currently 2 months in with the NJ 12 step process and haven't gotten past step 1 yet. So I'm thinking for the $200 or so fee it might be the way to go.

Anyone have any experiences with this process?

Hi Wayne. I have heard the Vermont title story and no doubt it is a way to go. As I understand it, Vermont did not require vehicle titles till about 25 years ago. Agencies can get a local Vermont title for you and you pack it over to NJ.

I'm in Georgia and they also did not require a vehicle title till the late 1980s. Your tag/plate registration papers are your proof of ownership. You sell with that and a "bill of sale" to the new owner.  You can get a title anytime with the usual fees.

The Vermont process also generates revenue as you are taxed on the book value of whatever you are registering-I don't know what guide they use but there is no negotiation. Yes, I've done it. Make sure you don't pay tax again when submitting paperwork to your home state for physical title.

Far out! They certainly don't make it easy, do they. Pretty sure you can register a moto here in Oz with a receipt from the person you bought it from, reg or no reg. It's up to the authorities to determine if it's been listed as stolen. Correct me if I'm wrong, you fellow Antipodeans.

Q, I didnt get a receipt off Wolgang when I swopped engine cases and he was in Europe on a buying trip. After playing tag with the rego underlings, no recept no rego I got the shits and asked for the boss. In 30 seconds it was sorted with a Stat Dec, they just need a paper trail. There are lots of posts re Tittils on Adventure Rider, by far the biggest USA based site around. Lots of info about wiggle room past government regs, eg registering 2 stroke dirtbikes etc.

Last registered my sf2 in the 90?s, and I need to provide proof of ownership to register it. I never kept the old rego papers. The kind man at the rms looked up the vin and told me all the details. It was registered LAV-74, how come I didn?t remember that!  I?m getting old.....

Your lucky Marty, I register my 1981 Husky Automatic maybe 10 years ago and the only document I had was a partially completed Western Australian registration paper. I was hoping it had been registered previously sometime in the past in NSW. If so and it had been registered for 2 years or more it could be reregistered easily at any time. Problem is the computer files only go back so far and then it's paper and they have zero interest in doing that. I lucked out by getting the Australian distributor, Hans Applegrin to write a letter saying they imported it and that got me through the rego hoops. There is always a way past the Burocrates if you just keep annoying them for long enough

Bob,

Did you go thru the process on your own or did you use one that advertised the on line services? If the latter who did you use?
I have a signed Bill of Sale, so I would think (hope) that would be the basis for taxes...

Thanks to all for the responses.
