manifold sleeve removal

I’ve only ever removed them from my Triples’s Dellorto’s, they are quite a tight fit and have to come out squarely or they bind up.gentle heat may help or some lubricant (WD 40) applied may loosen them up.

Before anyone ever heard of Ultrasonics I was having an issue with gummed-up carbs, the pretty experienced vintage bloke I took my carbs to soaked them in his professional parts cleaning tank. No heat occurred it was one of those recycling ones with a built-in hose and they stayed in overnight, my sleeves fell out on their own the next day. I have no idea what fluid it ran on, I was pretty shocked to see that.

it worked, WD40 together with heating to 65 degrees helped in softening the old nylon sleeves. They came out!

Now I have another issue ,the new sleeves (from Stein Dinse) do not go in; they seem 1-2 mm larger in size. Should they also be heated? Or the carbs heated only?

That's great news well done, wasn't the sales slogan for WD40 its amazing what a little squirt can do!!.......no offence to you Bert.

With the new manifold sleeves, mine were obviously tight but did go in however 1-2 mm sounds a lot?......I take it they are the right ones for your size carbs?............Best to check and measure first as you don't want to put too much unnecessary strain on the carb body itself............after that and if soaking/heating doesn't work my initial thoughts and thinking out loud are that if they are too big you could make a cut down them to allow them to close up a little and still fit tight within the carb body.

The new sleeves are 1.85 mm thick but the old ones were only 1.55 mm. The inner diameter of the sleeve was wright and just slides over the manifold. So I attached the manifold sleeves to a column drill and sanded them first with 80 sanding paper, next 120 and finally 240. They fit tightly now:):):):):). Thanks for all help

Common problem, Dellorto do 2 sizes of sleeve for PHF, the common one that everyone wants has not been available for years but it doesnt stop people like SD flogging you one that doesnt fit to clear their old stock. They do the same thing with the clamp ring selling then as PHF/PHM....well they cant be both. All the usual phf carbs use part number 8595 however Dellorto made an odd series of PHF MD/MS With a shorter larger sleeve part number 11715 that allowed for the fitting of an oil type seal in front of the sleeve
Biggest problem and the reason the sleeves get stuck is people over tighten the clamp and collapse the carb body on to the sleeve which then usually cracks when they try and lever the sleeve out.

Yeah, but ya gotta be sure they don't fall off! ;)

Cracked carb bodies are also quite common, same reasons. Cracked clip-ons, fork yokes, exhaust clamp rings, crushed cam bearings, stripped threads, all fine examples of ham-fistedness. Torque wrenches are obviously for pussies. Then there's the hammer marks... some people shouldn't be allowed to touch a motorcycle.

Thanks, always wondered where those too-thick sleeves would fit. I've never come across any Dellorto carb that even came close.
