Hi All , i have stripped my forks today 1980 jota 38mm forks and one of the springs is deformed (bent) in the lower 100mm ,Also someone made a hash of extending the long spacer putting in roughly 35mm into the length ,could it be to make the wrong springs the correct length or a mod? to stiffen up tired springs , Question is where can i find the correct spring length for 38mm marzocchi forks . no i dont have a manual! Tia

I would buy a replacement for the bent spring and measure it when it arrives 😁

While we wait for an expert, spacers are often present and used to help set your static sag. If your springs have compressed a bit over time then you may need a slightly longer spacer. Note that spacers don’t affect spring rate so don’t help to improve handling for heavier or lighter loads.

This a full-on guess but if you measure and count the gaps in the spring at its preload length and it comes out less than full fork travel it will bind the spring before bottoming the fork. Full travel is approx 130mm. It's way easier to try and get sag at 1/3 of travel adjusting the spring preload to that and keeping an eye with a cable tie on travel used. Race Tech sells springs and their site has a system to compute what spring rate suits you, the Ceranni section can be tricky to find. They tend on the former side of correct. Cer first. The spring calculator is here.

Brooky, don't muck about. Change the springs.

I fitted Race Techs, bought in the UK from PDQ. The difference was impressive.

The pre-load spacers are, as others have said, to set the sag. This should be done to suit each bike and rider. If you don't know what sag means, plenty of info on Tinternet.

Sag is to do with older people.
