Mikuni Balance Issue

While pretty impressed with the Mikunis fitted onto my SFC1000, they did over the past weekend ride to Dumblejung (650km or so) start exhibiting an unstable idle which progressively deteriorated until sounding like only 2 pots appeared to running, coupled with stalling by the time I got home. Off idle ran OK(ish) but started light pinking.

Once the filters were off it was clear to see the middle slide was some 4mm or so behind the outer two.

Taking off the centre cap revealed the lock screw had come loose.

Apparenlty this is quite common and should be fitted with some medium loctite (Red tip).

Now retightened, rebalanced and back to normal (getting to it is a bit tight though as directly under the top frame tube).

Something to watch for in the future I guess.

Happens on Dell'Ortos, too... The screw that holds the "cam" on the axle in each carb is also known/prone to bekome lose over time. Especially when the carbs have been dismanteled for ultrasonic cleaning, some forget to put a bit of Loctide blue on these screws.

This also happened to my new set of Miks on my RGS last spring. Screw fell out completely, slide was closed. Was very happy when I discovered the simple problem and fix.

Even the mighty FCRs are known to have a weakness in the grub screw adjustment area. I fixed mine solidly and machined a very sturdy adjustment system between the two shafts operating L & R carbs. Easier on a twin than a triple.

BTW, the black middle piece with the pinch bolt is made from an alu bicycle handlebar end!
