Missing pins from Brembo caliper

you dont listen to me at all do you Nicko?

I told you, and showed you, years ago how I lockwire my pins together on standard calipers, you asked why I did that, and I explained that they can rattle as per standard and in good condition, and fret about in the caliper body, not ever a problem on a 2000 mile per year bike, but after about 60,000 or 80,000 kilometres (no idea how many) the pins can become a loose fit, and for that reason I changed calipers, and forever more lockwired the pins together (differrent from 500's as there are two pins, so wired together) this stops them fretting and I never had another problem with probably double that mileage on the replacements,

Got four pots and 320mm discs now, so problem gone, plus she willl squeal the tyre at stupid O MPH's

I recall Andy Gibbs (74 SFC) at Silverstone in about 1986, having nasty moment because his pins camne out in his rear caliper, that is what made me look closely at mine.

Any way, when is the  diesel trailer queen due back? there is a possibility of a nice 600 mile day next Sat

I don't get it, if you have the centre pin and springs in as per stefans drawing ie as they were designed which all mine have then the pins won't come out! Not sure how the pins can come out if the brakes have all the bits!!!
All the bits were there, including the centre pin and spring.  Upon removal of the rear wheel, only the pads were left.

I do use the rear brake a fair bit, primarily on gravel roads.  Not enough feedback through the handlebars on the 1200 to use the front brake off pavement very much (unlike my Husky which can tolerate amazing amounts of front brake before gradual lockup).

Safety wiring it will be... back to riding this weekend.

Hi Andy

for the amount of time your 1200 is spending offroad and in the gravel, isn't it about time to fit proper knobby tires....? :D

I'm rethinking the whole gravel road travel now with the 1200... still looking for an alternative bike that fits between the Husky and the 1200.  Atlas, Elefant, Quota, Kangaroo, Camel, ...?

On a related note, my rear caliper has suffered somewhat from the loose pin syndrome.  The replacement pins have virtually no friction holding them in, just the spring and my safety wire is doing the trick for now.  Would feel a lot more secure if there was more to it than that.

Aebbern, if you are worried about the idea of relying on lock wire, don't, it works perfect and looks cool too. Alternatives are as as Bob first mentioned. Another alternative is just use a large split pin instead of the pin, if the caliper pin holes are already flogged out, and forget the anti rattle spring bit, I use that in my old 08 on the back and it works fine. For front calipers, go with the flow and uprate. If you want perfect original, get new original calipers.

although brand new Brembo F 08 calipers are still available and not all that expensive, there must be some way to rescue calipers with worn pin holes? What about some sort of inserts for the worn holes. Drill them larger and insert some sort of bushing?

Paul,

Yes, there is such a thing as an oilite bush:
http://www.bearingboys.co.uk/Oilite_Bearing_Bushes_-1011-c

Drill out the parent metal to slight interference fit on the bush OD and tap it in.
Make sure the ID is generous as the bush shrinks slightly when it is fitted.

I fitted these bushes to my rear brake actuating arm - works well! Soak in oil before fitting to 'prime' the bush.
