Misty clocks (again)

Chums, advice needed please. The tacho on my Jarama has a problem with condensation. After the ILOC rally and getting soaked on the way home the tacho is virtually 10/10 cloud!. I've taken it off the bike and spent a week drying it out but am loathe to put it back on until I can prevent further misting. It's been looked at twice now and I'm starting to think that the seal between the glass and the binnacle is leaking. I can put a small sachet of silica gel in the space where the non functioning genny lamp would be, but that means pulling it all apart again when the gel gets saturated. So...I've been thinking...if I use a thin bead of translucent RTV silicone around the glass/binnacle join would this solve the problem??. Any ideas/advice/help/suggestions gratefully received ...Regards  Stuart

can't you work some silicone into the 'gap' between the glass and the binnacle using your finger to work it in. it's a bit tedious, but if you go all the way round and then wipe the surplus off with a tissue, it should sort the problem

Henry, that's what I was thinking but using a small 2ml syringe from work to lay a thin bead of silicone round the glass/seal.All I need to do now is get the silicone into the little syringe!  :) Stuart

Sound like it might be an idea to get 'em dismantled, cleaned and put back together properly with the glass resealed- they shouldn't mist up.

Not long been refurbished, they look the part but the condensate is starting to p*** me off.Is it possible just to get it 're-sealed'? It's got a new face/glass etc and the innards were looked at so it doesn't need servicing. :( Stuart

Hmm, sounds like you need to have a word with whoever did the work.

My clocks always misted up back in the day, they got better though.

My speedo fogs up while I'm riding on a cool day. The faster I go the foggier the glass gets. It clears again when I stop. The tacho does the same but to a lesser extent. The air pressure inside the gauge must increase while moving (moisture condenses out of the air as pressure increases).

Thats due to the eyeballs rattling causing partial myopia..

The misting may be down to the casings of your clocks becoming heat exchangers and cooling down allowing condensation on the cooled glass.. 8)
