"Modified" triple tank

Somebody (not me) professionally widened this tank by ca. 4 cm, presumably with a sledgehammer. Why? I have no clue. Maybe for the petcocks to clear the head on an early triple? Does anyone have another educated guess what this was supposed to be? Can't ask the previous owner because I have no clue when and how I acquired it....

I'd guess it's done to clear frame bracing. Not the accepted versions of bracing in the steering head area but something akin to what I've seen done on big Z's. Often the coils have to be relocated and room is needed where it's been beaten in.

Mostly Jap bikes with BM trouble-you livery, Firestone tires, header wrap and all the hipster nonsense.

I used to knock around with a bunch of blokes that’s shared a club fuel tank. Modified to fit CB750s and z900s.
