More Safety in the New Year.

After years of Rhymors, there will be a trial of the long used for only heavy vehicles Time over Distance Speed Cameras for all Vehcals in NSW—Pacific Hwy between Kew and Lake Innes, and The Hume between Coolac and Gundadai will be tested first, once that data arrives it will wet their pants for more. Bet that results in the dozens of other time over-distance cameras used only for heavy trucks being switched also to all vehicles pretty soon. For years I would cruise at 117 in those 110 zones and a bit more on the bike and no one would bat an eye. So with Red Light, Phone, Seat belt and Noise Cameras I now feel much safer that I will lose plenty of CASH soon.
 
Had them for ages over here Vince, only on roads with the worst accident records and not sure if they actually reduced the accident rate despite the revenue. Speed cameras here do not register bikes and fixed cameras always have signs at the approach.
 
They're only on the major routes East and South over here Maybe they added another on going North.. Driving my car to and from Perth they don't bother me. Riding my bikes to and from Perth I'm on back roads so they don't bother me. The one on the Forrest Hwy south is about 60 kms between cameras. I'm more worried about mobile speed cameras or patrol vehicles marked or more common unmarked.
 
Where it will affect us is heading home from 2-day rides south of Sydney with this trial and everywhere if they go mob wild, all major Hwy roads have them now for heavy trucks. Typically there are a few rides that end 600ish ks on day one out of Sydney. On day 2 you suffer get homeituss that results in bombing back on major roads right through the new camera areas. It's not a nice Christmas present. BTW this almost happened a lot over the years but the Rural government members blocked it.
 
We have many average speed cameras here and they are occurring in even slower speed limits along with the roll out of 20 mph limits in a lot of towns and villages - absolutely unnecessary in some places / long villages at 30 mph

A mate of mine had to recently attend a 'Speed Awareness Course' (given as an option to a fine and penalty points on his licence) as a result of being photographed while furiously hurtling through Brighton at 24 mph.
He could've gone faster on a bicycle and escaped any penalty.
You couldn't make it up!
 
i GOT THREE POINTS LAST MONTH FOR DOING 35mph IN A 30mph ZONE. iT WAS DARK, VERY WET AND VERY POOR VISIBILITY, ITS A CAMERA POSITION THAT IS FIXED AND i KNOW IT WELL, i WAS LITERALLY CRAWLING ALONG, WIPERS FLAT OUT, MANY COMMUTING PEDESTRIANS ON AND OFF THE KERB, LOTS OF HEAVY TRAFFIC, i DARE NOT TAKE MY EYES OFF THE ROAD FOR A SINGLE MILISECOND, NEVER MIND WATCH THE SPEEDO, I WAS HOLDING TRAFFIC BACK BEHIND ME, AS I SAID VISIBILITY WAS VERY POOR, I NEVER DREAMT THAT I WAS OVER THE LIMIT, I FELT AS IF I WAS CRAWLING ALONG, I WAS THE LEAD CAR OF SEVERAL, HAVING CHECKED WITH THE CAMERA PARTNERSHIP I NOW KNOW THAT IN A A 30 ZONE IN THAT TOWN NOONE IS PROSECUTED UNLESS THE LIMIT IS EXCEEDED BY 10% pLUS 2 MPH, YOU GOT IT, BANG ON 35, AND I AM NICKED, £100 fine and 3 points on my license plus an insurance increase for the next four years, madness at its extereme. my actions were very much controlling the safety of that area at the time.

Enjoy whatever road freedoms you can find while you can. It certainly won't be long before your rego sticker or equivalent is also a tracking and recording device, so every millisecond you're over a posted limit, you're gone. Believe it - it's coming.
 
Except for my Laverda, I use electronic cruise control on my other bikes. Takes the worry out of being 3 or more km/hr over the limit on these revenue raisers. Boring but useful sometimes.
 
For sure, but in many cases those Time over Distance roads are either unavoidable or bypassing them adds huge amounts of extra travel time. One suggestion I saw was in a lot of cases like Wotton Way, a great bike road that diverts off the Pacific Expressway adding that would be fun and we usually do and it might take out any calculated fine sticking to the expressway might cause. It's going to add an extra layer to future route planning. The issue we in Sydney have is the approximately 600ks via Expressways North to The Oxley or south to The Snowys that have these cameras. Every major road in the state has them.
 
I get my road riding thrills on a circuit these days, is where the Motodd shines. otherwise its the GSBM on the dirt options I have to get to most places I need to get to. If I have to travel hwys the BM rides comfortably on the speed limit.
I am lucky to have country road out of my driveway and back roads tarmac to ride the Motodd locally.
 
I'd prefer to sit in the car and listen to the cricket than sit on the SFQ wearing out the middle of my rear tyre. Gimme backroads and dirt on the moto any day. Nothing wrong with a bit o' dirt.
 
The first time I went to Meolboure I was surprised at how short it was from the border, it's close to Sydney to Newcaste distance.

Changes to the scheme and road safety measures
Cameras clocking the “average speed” of light vehicles will be taken off the state’s roads, while the number of roadside enforcement sites where mobile speed cameras can be used will double — another 2700 new sites will be added into the mix, but enforcement hours will remain the same.
 
I hope that proves true. The time over-distance cameras make any fiddling very difficult to achieve, all you can do is stop for a coffee a lot. The Mobile Speed Cameras with the reintroduced Signs X number of mitres before and after at least give you a fighting chance to see the sign and slow enough to avoid a fine, that is if you're only a bit over the limit, my usual 10kph over to avoid being static and not noticed in traffic technic.. The WAZE app also helps as people notify the app and they get announced on your GPS screen. All this polarver is being instigated by THE SAFTY NAZIS. There is a whole academic profession agitating for Towards Zero, and their latest is Casual Speeding. Apparently, if you go 5kph over the limit you will immediately kill yourself and every family member you have. The TV ads are a complete joke.

Interesting how speed seems to be the main issue because that’s easily measured even if relatively irrelevant until there’s an incident where an incompetent hits another road user at speed.

IMHO, driver competence and attention are much more important but are harder to measure with cameras and other replacements of officers on patrol.

Revenue is of course very relevant. Public opinion that the authorities are trying to help us save lives (even if those road users are incompetent and should not never have earned the privilege of driving a killing machine) is even more so.

For example, making mobile phones not work when the driver’s vehicle is in motion and putting together a licensing scheme that eliminates the incompetents from the privilege of using public roads would be a reasonable approach but may not keep the elected officials in power.

So we’ve got what we collectively deserve?

I dont think anybody is against reducing road casualties but it’s how you go about it that creates the controversy. They’ve tried the 20mph blanket speed limit in many built up areas in Wales, but that has been rolled back in some places as the number of motorists ignoring the limit, despite the thousands of FPN issued, hasn’t particularly modified the driving habits of most people who just want to get to where they are going in as short a time as possible.
