MOT- new one on me..

Took the Guzz for an MOT and after the usual checks the guy try’s to tank the tank cap cover off- apparently the fuel cap seal is now a testable item. I hadn’t heard of this before - make sure you give your leaky Lav cap a wipe before you hand over the keys!

Checking the cap seal and has rightly been part of the MOT for a long time.
Appropriate maybe with EFI, pump systems and evaporative canisters etc. on modern machines but on gravity fed fuel systems you can't actually have a sealing fuel cap else the fuel will stop flowing as air pressure in the tank reduces. Must let air in to replace the fuel flowing out and those older tanks did not have a one way valve so there was always going to be evaporative fuel loss through the cap.

(Special case on the early Laverda twins with the sealing cap and a breather/overflow tube out of the tank)

My RGA Sprint tank got so hot in the sun and a hot engine parked up in Southern France (Gap) on the BFN tour the fuel expanded and poured out the cap, caught most in a plastic bottle from the fuel line.

You can understand why they used to chill fuel with dry ice for production racing eh! They'd get quite a bit more in and at race pace have used it up before it had time to overflow as it warmed.

Never fill a tank right up with a hot engine.

Paul

Never fill a tank up to the brim on a hot day even with a cold engine - under the ground storage tanks are far cooler than ambient and will expand as soon as air temp hits it.
