Moto logic and the new math

I sat down with my calculator and determined that over the past 60 days in DaNang we have been spending $80 to $90 a month on the local version of Uber. It seems that for a bit more than twice that sum I can rent a nice scooter by the month. So I went ahead and got a Honda ADV 160 scooter for $220 a month. That makes perfect sense, right?

The bike has 34k kms, front ABS, keyless start and looks and rides like new. We ordered a couple of new helmets so we don’t have to wear the rental agencies old sweat pots and the shop is putting a Givi tail box on it. I picked up two pairs of ventilated riding gloves and we will be getting specialized ponchos for the coming monsoon season.

Our flat is on the beachfront and only a few kms from relatively open roads, certainly the traffic drops off dramatically. The charming old town of Hoi An is 1/2 hour south along the coast and there is a great twisty pass over the hills on the road to Hué that we could see from our window in our old apartment. Traffic in town is heavy, but the roads are smooth and wide. And I’m learning the unwritten rules of the road, it looks like complete chaos at first! The best thing is that speeds are low, a maximum of 50kms mostly, so no need for a big bike.

And you can also take up to four friends when you go out- I want pictures of you in fli-flops, four up!

Sounds like a good plan, so long as your medical insurer is fine with it… I’ve heard some sad cases
From what I’ve seen in such circumstances, the tourists on hire bikes are mostly to blame themselves.

I just do as the locals do, I find it best to follow middle aged women. They seem to have an inbuilt radar for avoiding bad situations, that and family scooters, the little tackers turn around and make faces at the round eyes on a scooter.

Nothing ever seems a rush, and in the main, there’s no need to rush.

ATTN: Steve G. Not sure how to contact off forum but WTF ! Vintage bike show in Peachland on
Sunday,the 31st. Maybe a short road trip ?
Hi! Yes, well aware of the Peachland bike show. Extremely great show. Can’t do it this weekend as I’m ’farm sitting a ranch’ for family as they visit,,,,,,Peachland!!! actually Penticton but might as well be Peachland. Also, forecast of thunderstorms in the Coast mtns Sunday so riding up
And back would mean a weekend overnighter.
So, take lots of pictures!! I know a dude in Penticton who’s gonna have a big collection of Ducatis and a Bimota, hopefully a Laverda makes a presence!!

Steve: Now home BUT I did hang with Wolfgang & Margot yesterday coming back from
the show. Mea Culpa...took a camera and promptly forgot about picture taking ! Also I
picked up some ex-Jim Henderson 750 parts from his friend Gary Tate in Oliver when I
headed out to Nakusp. No Laverdas or interesting Ducatis/Guzzis etc etc at all. Not even
that much interesting Brit stuff but still a few real rarities. I would guess about 70 or so bikes.
Next time I visit I will have to connect with that Ducati guy. Oh yeah...your comment on
Karens is spot on !! Ciao

Greg
