mudguard inox??

I feel a bit embarrased opening this topic... but I need to ask.

The mudguard says with little letters: "INOX", but the magnet feels more attracted as myself for Natalie Portman, so I have always assumed that they were normal steel, and actually those of my SF3 were re-chromed!
Today this friend who is looking for exhaust told me that they are stainless, because it says.... INOX, he said he polished them and they are fine as they would be stainless. He said, look to the colour, is stainless, I said, yes but look the magnet, he said, yes but look, 30 years under the island humidity and no rust, and I say, OK I AM GOING TO ASK IT TO THE FORUM  :LOL: :LOL:

What do you think?? it is stainless or steel? can they be re-chromed? or just need to polish them as with stainless??

There are different grades of stainless steel with different amounts of chromium added (stainless steel is basically a mix of steel and chromium).
As a result the level of magnet attraction will vary.
If it says Inox then polish it.
Although it is a high chrome steel any chrome plating will not adhere and will ultimately peel off.

Hi Grant!

Well, mines of the SF3 said "INOX", but my usual welder said, with this magnet attraction, it MUST be steel. So I send them for chroming and they came back mirror chromed. May be the grade of steel is high enough to allow chroming?? No idea.

The ones of the 1000 are the same, it says INOX, and magnet feels the same. BUT is it true that they have no rust, and they chrome of the exhaust, being in the same place for the same time was totally brown. So may be I will polish them and give them a chance as stainless! much cheaper!

pf1, well, the word inox is in the front mudguard, but both must be the same, they are in same condition and with same magnet attraction. (I take a normal steel piece and apparently without any magnet atraction difference)

give them a thorough wipe/rub down with a rag wetted with brick & tile cleaner or shower glass cleaner (i.e. ~15% hydrochloric acid) and the rust staining will come out after a few minutes. it's only ferric iron staining from the low grade stainless as it 'weathers'.

Stainless downpipes will discolour brown due to the heat, but can easily be polished back to as-new. I do this routinely.

Sorry, my last message english was rubbish🤪

The exhaust chrome was destroyed, but the mudguards were without rust! Supporting the theory (or confirmation) from Grant that they are stainless indeed! So maybe is enough with polishing and no need to rechrome...

Definitely don't chrome them - as mentioned there is definitely magnetic stainless steel. Chrome guards would look decidedly naff on a laverda - as do chrome plated alloy covers - man I HATE that!!

Inox was a guy who worked at the Breganze factory and he took back his stamp after an argument with management over long lunch breaks  8) :-* :LOL:
 
They are stainless Miguel, I was asking about the rear guard because I know someone who needs one with the inox stamp for a restoration.
 
It's stainless, Miguel.  Polish it.

INOX is the French word for Stainless Steel!

Please don't get hung up on this 'magnetic' thing, many stainless steels are magnetic.
Chefs stick their stainless steel knives to magnets on the walls don't they!

Inoxydable to be precise. Non oxydable.

You sure chefs use stainless knifes?

top Chefs use steel knives, ask my brother in law or any of the Roux's (well the ones that are left anyway (RIP Michelle snr and thanks for the Mercedes BTW) it is true though that a lot do use stainless, my own rack contains both, the ones I use all the time are steel, the other are stainless, the steel one's will  out sharpen and hold on to it, far longer than the stainless ones.

I recently purchased frt and rear fenders from 1972 SF2. They had been painted (topside and underneath) and later the tops were somehow stripped of the paint. The surface of the top looked like they were stripped with an extremely caustic something or other. They almost look like Damascus steel.  Also they are very small specks of brown, rust? Maybe from a wire brush that was used on the fender???
I am having the paint on the underside removed and then will polish the top, and the bottom if needed.
Yes Mr INOX left his impression on the fenders.
Another chapter in resurrecting the dead. All it takes is money, sweat and determination (some call it stubbornness)
