ND Speedo repair.

Watchmakers use whale oil (or used to}. Supposed to be the best lubricant for fine mechanisms. Not sure if you can get it anymore....maybe in Japan.

Seems like the retaining bands for the Nippon Densos are getting more and more difficult to find. The firms that repair the instruments are generally reluctant to reveal their sources. They really shouldn't be that difficult to make if you have access to a lathe and can source out thin wall tubing of suitable dimensions. I have the plans and process in my head and will give it a try sometime.    It is possible to remove the  rings with minimal damage anyway so you can reuse them. Basically my process is to use a steel pipe with the inside machined out so the clock will fit in snuggly; then you can carefully pry back the ring without distorting it. Reassembly is basically the reverse. When you reattach the faces be sure to put a tiny drop of paint or mild Loctite on the 2 screws. Very annoying when you see a little screw dancing around at the bottom of your tachometer after a couple of hundred miles.

Ha ha Been there Dennis ..Got the loose screw T shirt !?

I am freezing my tits off.!!

rebuild them and seal the clocks using a good flexilbe plasict.......Fuck my spelling has failed me !

I have just rebuilt two clocks ,,  It took me two weeks.

My Grandfather was a clock maker . This helped

Just got a quote from Ottos in QLD. AUD$250 a clock for cosmetics alone :'(

So, what is the word on the gear from Clocksanddials, as I think I may be finding a quiet moment to do it myself.

Davo, my BM gs100's speedo is on route back from Ottos this minute. $220 to refurbish. I'll wait till I see it before commenting! Sent off 2 months ago so don't be in a hurry. Does good work I'm told.

I think it is not easy to make some choices.

I found on the second hand market, in very good condition the Instrument holder N.D. complete and the Cable with bulb socket for 300 ?

Having the set in advance pleases me well. For cons, I would maintain their mechanism

300 ? seems a good price when I see price of the renovations

I regained the site on the dismantling method and reassembling ND

Have you got it back yet Rob? If so, what is it like? It would want to be like new at those prices, eh?

A question on lubricating
I think it was mentioned about hanging instruments over a simmering pan of parrafin or some other similar I am I correct ?
Is this a good idea ?

It appears that this guy in France has a source for the uncrimped rings. http://www.leboncoin.fr/equipement_moto/88774270.htm?ca=7_s. French speakers? JLO warns to be careful of leboncoin sellers but....

Ken

Hi Ken and Gents

I can help you to acquire these rings

JLO is right about vigilance, but I buy parts for sale on this site. I've never had a problem, and I even made good business. It is a copy paste of the site Italian Subito.it.

I do not think there are more problems that on Ebay for example. Just like on every site selling watch what we buy

On the message on December 13 of this post (thread ?) I gave the address of a supplier in France who sells these rings (between 20 and 25 ?). This provider has a very good reputation in the old Honda. I renew my offer of help ...  If somebody whant

I did look at the site you referred to but prices on the parts were by inquiry only and I didn't trust my French. My gauges are working OK for now and I don't anticipate opening them myself, but it's nice to know that there is an option if anyone needs it.

Hi Xavier,

Do you have an electronic version of documents with the instructions for dismantling in English?  I am in Australia and my French is rather rusty.
Avez-vous une version ?lectronique des documents avec les instructions pour le d?montage?  En anglais?  Je suis en Australie, et mon fran?ais est tr?s compl?te de l'oxyde ferreux.

Which instructions instructions for dismantling are you referring to? I couldn't find any on the ddmototeam site.

These instructions that Xav posted (http://www.salocal.com/sohc/tech/speedo/spedo1.htm) are in english.

Cheers,
Cam
Thanx Dellortoman, must have had a page redraw issue cos didn't see the link.  Blame it on a cable broadband speed that is more like dial-up at times....don't get me started on Telstra here in Australia (vents loudly, grinds teeth, mutters curses in many languages).  Better speed this afternoon......
I picked up a very clean CB750 K2 speedo from my local bike wrecker in good condition, so plan to transfer the guts of the Jota's slightly bingled speedo to the new shell.  Other than that the only issue is fading of the logos etc on the speedo and tacho faces.

Got the front forks and oil cooler etc back on my Jota resoration today, then went inside for a beer as 40 degrees celsius here today.....
Next step is front wheel bearings removal & replacement.

Hello SpringSoft

I do not think your French is so rusty. (and it's kind of you to have made your effort in French)

Little translation help:
when you write my French is Rather rusty, translation is mon Fran?ais est un peu rouill?.

To return to what's bothering you, Cam showed you the right path. It's on socal.com site that you'll find the instructions

I will apply to DD Moto Team to give us his parts prices and the cost of shipping to England, the United States, Australia and Europe

Cheers

Xavier
