neutral switch

I am new to this forum but try my luck.
I have purchased an 750SF last month. the neutral light was not working.
turns out the wiring was OK and something wrong with the switch.
took the old one out and the previous owner had tried to extend the switch rod/button with a small screw!
the new switch I installed does not work probably because it is not long enough anymore.
what is the consequence of this? internal shaft with groove? easy to replace?
it seems something small turns about to be something not so nice....
any feedback is welcome

Before fiddling around further, would be wise to check if the little wire bar located in the selector drum is still present.  This bar passes over the switch and actuates it when in neutral position.  Should be able to feel it with a screwdriver poked up the switch hole, or even try to peer inside.  A little endoscope would be perfect...

On very rare occasions the bar can fall out.  Or an over-zealous "tuner" has removed it in an effort to loose weight.  If this is the case, engine out and open it up. :D

The switch can be adjusted for light action by adding/removing sealing washers, thin 0.5 and 1.0mm alloy in this case.
