Neutral switch

slap my wrist I should know that, so where is the RGS neutral light switch?
CLEM

It's mounted in the side of the gearbox where the 180 gearchange mechanism would be.

Have been looking on fleabay and there are a lot of switches - especially Honda that could be a direct replacement? - any Honda aficionados here that may know.? Thread on Laverda is 14*1.5mm I believe. - regards - Phil

If not would something like this work for the readily available M10x 1.25 threaded varieties?

No! I just checked the table here

but may still be available elsewhere

I think I have have some bad news.
If Phil is correct and the info for the Honda neutral switches also correct then the threads we are after are ISO Metric Fine not Coarse.
So at the moment we couldn't use those inserts as they are coarse.

I am on the case.

I heard the same as you Red.
If that is indeed the case which as he is the only one to have them makes sense then one day it would be a case of his last one ... when that would be however is depended on how many he has left.

So what about searching for reverse light switch instead as they work the same principle ? there are a number who use 14 x 1.5 am sure that one could be adapted to suit.
Worst case is that if the one that suited but had two terminals in that case you run the second wire to earth. Some nice flag terminals would not make hang down much more.

well Ralphy boy (Fungus face), told me that he had asked Piero who the maker was whilst he was attending a UK event, and he was informed, he then asked them to do another production run and bought the minimum required which was huge.
It matters lot he has got thousands of last's one in the world and not just neutral switches, I have saved a BMW boxer one but not yet offered it up, it doies look possible, although has two tabs so maybe is a "circuit completer" rather than an "earth switch", not hard to ground one side.

easy to make a 10.25*14.5mm bush - probably with a flange on it to suit the larger sealing area that the laverda will have - think the Honda ones are 14mmAF - Regards - Phil

I'm just surprised that Laverda had a special switch made for their bikes!

You'd think it easier to just use an existing high volume part from BMW or Honda or something? That's what they did with lots of other electrical bits, switches and stuff, wasn't it?

Unless it was an oversight once the gearbox and crankcase was finalized.....oops!

is that correct Lothar ?
I was told by my main dealer that Ralph bought the entire remaining stock of neutral switches from the manufacturer (Bosch ?) way back in the dark ages and that he would not do any deals with any of the other dealers to supply them, hence none are available but from him

few years ago I bought 5 different neutral switches from Fleabay with the intention of making an adaptor to screw in to the hole and thus come up with an alternative but the work load got in the way of that project and I have hardly even looked at the problem since and I will not be looking at it this year either

I am sure he did a reproduction run. I asked Piero some years back if he remembers the manufacturer and he pointed me to Ralph, as Ralph had done that before and would have lots of stock. He supplied Piero with some free of charge units as far as I know for his private stock (about 10?) and yes, he refuses to do bulk deals with other parts dealers, as he knows a reproduction run again is possible, but expensive...

for sure not... I think the minimum quantity was around 2.000 units when I asked the manufacturer. I would need to check if I still have the e-mail, but considering Ralph sold the first ones for 19 BPD, his costs for sure weren't higher than maybe 10 BPD per Unit. However, one has to consider that he won't ever run out of stock, so the calculation needs to consider the whole costs divided by the units you sell in the first 2-3 years, maybe - if you are gentle to your customers... - 5 years. If he sells 2 in a week, this makes 100 per year and maybe 500 in 5 years. Considering the costs for the 2.000, it's 4 times the unit cost what you need at least to cover per sale...

considering that, the last price I saw from him (around 30PBD) is still cheap.

Fortunately my 40yr old neutral switch is still working/not leaking (touching wood). Subaru and Kia gearbox switches (reverse lights)  are M14x1.5 thread on some models, probably worth a closer look. AFAIK always 2 connectors, so they would require adding a ground wire.
