new battery goes flat

nope

The only way I have managed to start it is connected to my car battery (car not running),then sounds fine, but no restart when dissconnected.

Shaun, the solenoid can't click if you bypass it. Leave the starter button alone and use a single jump lead from the battery to the starter - if the battery's good, the starter will spin up and therefore narrow down the source of your problem.

Go try again and tell us what happens.... ;)

Shaun, going out on a limb here, sounds like maybe an earth leak in the starter, last year I had a small crack appear in one of the insulators allowing it to arc across to earth, started one second but then nothing but a click from the relay, puzzled why it lets you jump start it tho (dunno)  maybe the extra kick from a bigger battery is enough to get past the problem.

Maybe the fact it was flat before you left was a clue...

Sounds like it is not charging, suspect reg/rec first then check the multiplug to the l/h swtich cluster for burnt wires. Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals you want to see 13-14 volts with the motor running around 2000rpm.

Good punch up at the AGM ?  ;)

    Keith

Contrary to expectations there's wasn't even really a hint of a punch up! The sun was shining though out and there was a good attendance.

James

well that is pretty damn disappointing
looked like it was on for a right old dust up after reading all the posts on the ILOC forum

Thanks John, will add to check list,

Red,can you shed any light on this?

LJ

When my starter went kaput a few weeks ago it was draining enormous amounts of power when I tried to use it, turned out the brushes were stuffed. Not expensive to fix, however it also turned out several of the battery crimps were stuffed at the same time. Get someone who knows electrickery to have a poke around with a muiltimeter and see what is going on. Even your local auto electrician will be able to diagnose it in a few minutes.

is that a pun LJ ?

nope, electricity is not my strong point, plenty of other true experts here who will supply better advise then me

1)  lucky bugger
2)  3 phase
3)  lots but dependent on revs, 18-26 volts phase to phase
4) combined
5)  yes
6)  Shindregen 530 SH (spelling is incorrect)

take your own tea bags

Good luck

Norm,

Bad connections at this plug will result in the whole caboodle self-destructing...

When the lights are switched on, the 3rd  phase of the alternator is connected through the LH switch, lots of current needs to pass through contacts that are at best, only marginal.  After several years of use and abuse, internal resistance rises to the point where the cable, connectors or switch contacts simply burn away.

Piet, would this explain the groan of the relay if it is that when I turn the lights on and their dimming? Although they seem to recover the second time they are turned on?

Shaun - first question - when you connected direct from the battery to starter and got the funny smell, was it the battery on the bike that you used?

Next question - when you jump started it from your car battery, how did you do this?  Connections from car battery to bike battery, or car battery direct to starter?

After checking the charging system is working,14 volts at 2000rpm,my next port of call is either an Auto Electrican or GOOD battery seller with a load tester. Not many good quality batterys around these days, there made to a price these days.Do the simple stuff first. There must be an echo in here, everything I just wrote has been in earlier posts

Well the battery is certainly f****d put in another new lead battery I had and started first hit.

Question is of course charging system maybe faulty, but if you are riding it and the battery empties does this fuck up the cells wouldn t it just drain?

Shaun - you're assuming the battery hasn't failed due to an internal short.  I reckon the battery has failed in that way; partially or fully self discharging in the process.  Could be faulty manufacture; poor design or vibration.  Check on charging voltage with the engine running with Norm's voltmeter (or more quickly - do the lights get brighter when you rev it?) will hopefully confirm all is well in that department.
