New cams & new tappets

Megacycle says I have to use new tappets with my F1 regrind cams. I've come across this statement before, but I've never been able to find a good explanation for why I'd have to do it. Can anybody here enlighten me?

Hi Ken
Ideally it's advised so the cam and bucket bed in together. If you use old or worn buckets it can accelerate cam wear. Have they treated the new camshaft by nitriding or ultra hard coating? If so that can be super thin and break down quickly on worn buckets. If not I'd suggest you would be fine using the existing buckets if you polish the bearing face with superfine wet and dry paper using engine oil in a figure of eight motion on a flat plate. I'm sure other guys will chip in with hopefully personal experience of their regrinds.

Ken,

You could take your tappets to a local machine shop with a surface grinder.  The hardening is quite thick, removing 0.02-0.03mm to restore the wearing surface works well.  I do mine on my lathe with a tool post grinder.  Needs to be carefully set up, but the results are fine and a lot quicker than rubbing down on emery.

Failing that, I can supply new tappets in standard and oversize diametres.

Always a good idea to use new tappets with new cams.  Sort of like fitting new brake pads when fitting new discs.

Ken..when I did my new Axtells Wolfgang had/has refurbished cam followers at a very reasonable fee, exchange, standard and oversize. I've got 24K miles on the refurbished followers no problems.

Standard operating procedure to do both from new. Also SOP to keep the followers matched to the same cam lobes and returned to the same position when adjusting the valves.

The story is once those moving parts "marry" and polish into each other, a change in components like a new camshaft, will/might damage the other matching moving part (follower).

I have seen this in some rebuilds back in the day..old cam followers and a new camshaft would wear out rapidly. It happens sometimes. Megacycles will not want to get into a warranty complaint if you use old cam followers. Thats why they suggest it.
