New project

Hello all, do we have any tyre / wheel boffins out there and has anyone used an aftermarket digital speedo / tacho on their bikes

I have just started work on a very trick project (not Laverda) it has a special race frame and AP callipers, this leaves virtually no room for a speedo drive so I am looking at aftermarket jobs, some of which look quite good. I think the tacho side of things will be simple enough - I use a digital tacho on Monty race bike, the speedo set up may be another story - any ideas or experience

My new bike is form the mid 70's and has tiny alloy rims fitted, the rear tyre on my Monty is much larger (wider) than the tyre fitted to the new project, does anyone have any guidance on what width of tyre I can fit to what width of rim the wheels are both of Kawasaki manufacture (correct for the bike and period) WM3 18"  I use Avon AM22 cantilever tyres on my monty which allows quite a wide tyre for the rim width

Any advice welcome

What actual width rims are you trying to find the tyre sizes for?
There are tons of digital speedos available now, mainly from China. I have used Acewell - it died after my battery went flat and the screen shut off never to recover. And now a Koso which for some reason after the winter the speedo has become erratic and I haven't found the reason (sender or unit) yet. Motogadget is expensive top of the line, and there are T&T which I have looked at. I'm not sure if they are all pretty sensitive or if more money equals better reliability. There are also GPS speedos available but the ones I have found warn that they are not waterproof.

I have used Sigma speedos for years, currently a MC10. Cost less than ? 20,00 and is easy to mount and setup.

Depending on the budget, a combined instrument from Motogadget could be worth checking. The sensor for the speedo can be mounted with some cable-ties, the impulse/signal giving part is a simple magnet, that can f.e. be glued to the bolt of one of the brake-disc screws. A system I plan to use when it comes to finalizing the Motoplast...

I have a Vapor unit from Trail Tech that works great. It uses a magnetic rotor bolt for the speedo sensor, a wrap around wire for the tach and also has air, water temp, clock, and trip odo functions. They are made for dirt bikes but its size and adaptability make it good for anything.

I reckon i can mount this 85mm inside the standard speedo shell.  Gsxr rims means no standard speedo drive. TC reckons he cant ride the 6 plugger until i fix this.  Wish me luck

Not too difficult to do.  All my conversions so far have retained the stock speedo drive.

I'm using a Motogadget Motoscope unit. Nice fabrication and finishing level but I have some occasional problems, 1) it becomes erratic (speed) sometimes (Motogadget says that it can be due to a metal mass somewhere, but metal is everywhere on a motorbike!) and 2) it looses memory (total mileage). Motogadget asked me to send them back the whole system for some checks but I was finally too lazy to stripping down the whole wiring.
Another issue is the very thin wires, fragile and not easy to connect reliably.
Apart that, it is a nice kit with many possible options.
I'm also using a M-Unit central unit, still from Motogadget, no problem with this one.

Is the m-Unit waterproof?
I am on my second one and it too goes haywire if water gets anywhere near it.

Nothing I like more than going for a long ride and washing the bike after. But washing became an obsession, I loved the way it would look after a solid washing. I decided a while back to stop washing the bike so much, even when I would start it after and let it completely dry I still recon it did some damage deep down.

My bikes have to be totally reliable in the rain - unfortunately the beautiful clean castings never stay that way for long of you ride on all conditions - ends up as 'patina'!

Thanks all, sorry I have missed your help, I am extremely busy trying to Boris proof my business

I know he's a loon but I can't help thinking he is going to get a result for us, if only he could get rid of some of the crippling import duties from Red and stuff I buy from the states that would be a start

Thanks again
