Went out sunday on 2 wheels, chuffed that I had sorted out the broken wire that was effecting the ignition circuit, only to return in 4 wheels, having been recovered.
Dead battery, regulatar not charging,  so being as I'm intending to keep the bike, brought new battery, as the old one was very suspect,  was continually on the drip charger, and the last owner had hardly used the bike for about 5 years. Ordered  new dynamo brushes, have removed the dynamo and cleaned up the commutator. Unfortunately the  Twin and Triple repair guide completely ommits to mention removing the rubber blank and undoing the screw, to dismantle it.
Took out a mortgage and brought a new bosch 11 anp regulator, (could have brought an after market or VW Beetle 30 amp for half the price, but I'm unsure of the effect if anything goes amiss,  and the batteries are expensive enough these days.
My question is, the old regulator has 4 connection points,  the new one 5, the difference is that the new one has an individual connector for the 61 connection where as the original combined the 61 with the D+ connection.
Would I be correct that I can use either for the wire that is presumably the ignition circuit, as it eventually is connected to the 2nd fuse in the fuse box?
 
I went the VW regulator way back when and within minutes of starting the bike, the dynamo burnt out. I've been told it had nothing to do with the reg, but I have never trusted that info! Had the dyna rewired and fitted the expensive genuine (as per Bosch part number) and never had an issue. I now run a Nippon Denso alternator off a big Kwaka. Most people with SFs go for modern digital regs these days.
 
I have used VW ones more than once but on long trips the overload resister underneath has burnt out, might not have if I had used headlight all day but not sure. I have used now two different digital ones (Sachse and Clover) and am not entirely happy with them, unstable with sometimes too high voltage - adjustable but not really satisfactory, and the Sachse one needs 1500 rpm before gen light goes out. The correct replacement Bosch ones are probably better. I have an original 45 year old one that is fine but changed out for space saving - I have relays in old reg position. The post 61 is for generator light, same with DF. B+ should go directly to the battery. By ignition you mean main bike power at the ignition switch? Not ignition system itself which just uses battery power.

I fitted a DVR4 regulator a few years ago and find it a big improvement over the Bosch. Charging from just above tickover and good voltage readings at all revs.

The electronic Bosch regulator is an excellent replacement for the mechanical original, is plug 'n play and looks almost identical, which is fantastic for concours restorers and rivet counters. :D  The only downside is the price, about ?140 retail.

When I checked the serial number, that's the one I have brought, I guess the old one has been superseded,
Just as well I didnt try to take it apart to check the contacts hadn't  any grease on them, Which is what a VW guy told me to do, when I dropped round to see him earlier. I was there to ask him to run me through the process of re-polarising the dynamo,  which as it turns out is amazingly simple.

I looked at the circuit diagram again, and yes the 61 runs to the gen light, I suppose it's the switched circuit and B+ to the battery.
I've not had the bike long, so don't really know enough about the sf's to start changing components from standard , and its had a few electrical issues already, broken wires in the loom and at a couple of connections, although the bosch unit came with a heafty price tag I should at least expect it to function without further alterations.
But I see what on mean about making more space, it's as if they put the regulator on the floor then built a motorcycle around it, and as for those connection blocks! to get to wires 1-12, just about have to disconnect all the wires 13-24
 
I think that the standard wiring has all too many trips through those terminal blocks, each pass a potential current thief twice over. As much as possible on mine now it goes directly from the switches to the end user, or a relay for heavy users, ignition key switches a relay too.
