Rightio, some dick has fucked up my mornings.

A part of my morning ritual involves, making some toast, having a coffee with my bread toasted dark on the outside, soft in the middle, butter and Vegemite to the very edges of the toast, a cup of coffee and reading the LF on the tablet.

:( Christmas saw our old toaster shit itself, so we bought a new toaster.
Advertising on the box said “Low power usage”

But the fucking thing cooks so slow that it hardly browns the outside, dries out the inside, and eating my toast is like eating ten year old Cruskits.

I’m thinking it must have some type of electrical governor of some description inside. Maybe I should operate, to see how I can ‘hot it up’ pardon pun.

My new(ish) toaster is similar to yours Chris. Takes a lot longer than the old one that died.

I presume the toasting rate is simply a matter of horsepower. For example, my old toaster was rated at 1050W. The present one is 750-850W (dunno why they give a range). That pretty much explains the difference in cooking time. They're both 2 slice toasters BTW.

When I bought it, my selection was based on price and general appearance. I neglected to check the power rating, thinking they'd all be on a par. I'm not fussy enough about toast to bother getting another toaster. But I'll know better next time.

If it bothers you enough to do something about it, go and look for the highest wattage toaster you can find.

My recent buy, as usual, had me perplexed, they ranged from $30 to over $200 so I went for the stainless one at $70 and it works just like a toaster. The end.

Above comments are bang on Chris, bin it and get a more powerful toaster or use the bbq. Or toasted sandwich maker.
Or perhaps shift house. You’re on 230v, go to NT where there’s still 240v 👍

Cam, they advertise a wattage range because of voltage variations, but mainly because of the rubbish manufacturing tolerances. Although I’m sure you had guessed that 😁

Get yourself a real toaster, Dualit, it comes in a two slice option as well, parts are cheap, and toast is awesome, we rolla 4 slice, with 7 of us in the house for breakfast you need it

Got that identical toaster plus a matching jug - in orange. Would buy again.

Once upon a time I worked for a heater manufacturer. Some of my job was winding elements for special jobs - a curved heater element for a bilge hot water tank for a boat was typical. Did a supercharged element replacement for a toaster for one of the boss's. He was an impatient type too.
Wanted his toast NOW! He had to upgrade the wall socket, lol.

That's so funny, heavier house wiring, 15amp toaster wiring. 3 phase next. I had to go 15amp for an AC, but a toaster.

Emily found a Sunbeam 'automatic' toastamatic at a garage sale - the ones where you put the toast in and it slowly drops, cooks and comes up when done. A genuine 60s classic - and it worked perfectly. Cooks the toast to an even golden brown. She gave it to our niece for her birthday about 4 years ago and it's still going strong. Clever mechanicals and bimetal innards and heat sensitive springs or however they did it.

My mum had one of those swinging door on either side jobbies. It was as hot as all get out.

Laying it on its side, propped up on a bowl at about 30 degrees, it was possible to put cheese on the toast and grill the cheddar cheese on the bottom door. The top of the cheese would bubble to a light crunchy ochre, while gooie underneath. 😋 Mmmm.

Mind you, I had to do a few cut and shuts on the element when it blew. It’s probably what made it glow so hot.
