No spark diagnostics

Did both coils get hot, you need to find out why that happened. It also happened to my bike when I had Johns IIS ignition fitted, 10 years trouble free and then this happened. That had a fail safe that should have stopped this but the fail safe failed. John fixed it but by then I was clearing the decks of any potential future issues. I would be surprised if your ignition didnt have this cut out when you leave the key switched on for a long time and the coil continues to be energised and get to hot, my problem back then. I have the same ignition as you now and its been great.
I dont have any coils for sale, I was just saying what's in my bike.

Think they were hot because of my clunky test wiring. Will get the electric guy to check

So, all your problems with spark actually started around here http://www.laverdaforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,95568.msg368275.html#msg368275

Maybe.  The split lead more likely culprit.

I honestly think it went like this:

1. Loose earth causes bike to cut out.
2. Carlo starts fuckin around with wiring to work out what's wrong.
3. Cooks coils
4. Carlo fucks around with more wiring to work out what's wrong.
5. Buggers up Deutsch plug connection.
6. Re-wire kill switch directly to coils as per many suggestions, eliminating uneceassary wiring, test firing works.
7. Only one cylinder fires.
8. Realises that at #3 I brought myself #7.
9. Tests the f**k out of coil.
10. Orders new coil and drinks a bottle of wine.

Now let me say in advance of you reading this next post...I am not making this shit up!!

So as there's nothing I can do about my coils I've hooked up the air horn to see if it will work easy enough.

So it's all goes up and the horn button triggers the horn as expected.

However...

I accidentally hit the starter button when try to take a video for you folks and the bloody horn goes off when the starter button is pushed.

That shouldn't happen?? Maybe why that coil won't fire!!

I've seen this before, because both buttons are on the handle bars
and the horn has a positive feed and the button provides the earth
and the starter button has a positive feed and the starter provides the earth,
you need a bridge rectifier between the feeds to the horn and starter buttons.

Hmmm why wasn't it happening before? I changed a few earths in the headlight around earlier maybe that's it?

Should have stuck with Step 10.

I suggest no more finger poking and take it to the expert to unravel and fix.
Quit while you're behind.
Stick with that bottle of wine.

:D the guy buggered up the dates so can't get in until 28th but Red has sent new coils and harness in meantime so hopefully here in time to fit this weekend, so just need to work out what I buggered up with the horn!

Pleased to report that the bike is now running  :D

It's still going into the specialist to have its harness simplified and the whole thing made more robust.

Thanks again for all the help, I would not have been confident enough to have had a crack without you lot.

Well done. What was the cause of the problem?

Depends how you look at it. Ultimately it was the coil but originally it was the loose earth that also killed the ignition programming. It was probably me that killed the coil though with my wiring workaround ;)
