No spark

Hi
I am new this forum so thought I would give you guys a go.
I have a spark problem on my 180 1981 jota as in it hasn't got one!
I've been restoring it over the last couple of years. Last weekend was the big day when it all came together.
First the butterflies and trepidation, which then turned to frustration. Disappointment followed, eventually ending in failure. The bike was running fine when I took it apart, and the wiring has gone back without any alterations. Anyone got any suggestions? Cheers.

The frame has been powder coated. It has btz ignition. Should the engine be earthed. I have tried earthing it with a cable from the battery to the engine but no change.

Yeh spins over good, lights work. And there is power at the resisters. Just no spark

find the ring terminal under the seat atatched to the right frame rail, with two wires in the one ring, there is about an inch of wire showing out of the main loom, that is the earth for the two ignition systems, the fault must be easy to find, since one "box" does the centre cylinder and the other "box" does the outer two, so its two seperate systems, and if neither of them make a spark, then something must be glaring at you.You could trying cleaning and rotating in the holders all the fuses, one of them is the ignition.

BUT BUT BUT

my money is on the connections to the batterry, there are large wires for the starter circuit and smaller ones, I will lay money, the small ones they are on the wrong end,

Thanks for that advise. I will check all that tomorrow and let you know what I find. Hopefully it is blindingly obvious!

Clem is talking about the same thing I was.
So we are either both correct, or both a mile out!  :D :D

It does sound like the new powder coating stopping a proper earth somewhere.

You didn't turn it over without the spark plugs resting on the engine, did you?  That blows the box. :o  or at least it does on the 1977 ones... (banghead) If there is anything left in the piggy bank a new ignition kit is a good idea anyway.

Hello,
had worked on an early 180? once, with HKZ.
The bike had run before. But had the rotor and the
ignition plate out.
After reassembling I didn't get it to run.
It turned out that the pickups' cables were so rotten
that they gave up from assemblin/reassembling.
Has often been the cause for troubles at early triples.
Don't know though if an 81' ignition would be prone to that
kind of fault.

Hi.
Well thanks for the feedback. Clem and Grant, you were both spot on. The powder coating was isolating the earth. Chipped the plastic away, reconnected and bingo! Fired into life, sounding as good as the day I took it off the road. I will put a picture up soon, see what you think. Also half way through an sf 750 so will need more expertise. Thanks again.
Gary.

if you are going to strip and paint a frame it's a good idea to tin the earthing points, don't know why almost nobody does it. it's a cinch, just use a dirty great big copper soldering iron that you have to heat with a flame and get it good and hot (use your cheek to sense the temp. no, don't touch it on) and using a good flux lay it on. the tin takes easily if you get it about right and you'll never have a contact problem again.
