Non standard regulator for 750 SF1

My SF1 is fitted with a non original regulator, see photo. I’d like to have a spare. Does anyone recognise the regulator in the photo, so I can start looking for one. I think it’s from a Brit bike of the 70s. Thanks

It's worth noting that the Laverda generator is rated for 11A, not 30A!

A much better option would be either (1) the money-no-object correct Bosch solid state replacement. It does away with exposed live case connection of the pictured item too.
Or (2) A DVR 4 replacement.

What Rob said - while the SF genny looks like VW one and puts out more than 11A, unlike the latter it doesn't have any ventilation, hence the lower amperage reg required. I can highly recommend the Bosch replica solid state replacement - not from personal experience (I've fitted a Kawasaki ND alternator) but from several owners who are using them. Money well spent.
 
So will installing the 30a one pictured above cause problems?
Not sure Pete, but when i fitted a VW to mine many years ago the genny immediately burnt out - I've been told that shouldn't have happened. Maybe just pure coincidence - but I certainly never took the chance again!
 
From experience it won´t damage anything. I had several vw ones on my bike but each they would fail on long high speed touring, the resistor underneath was very flimsy and burnt out, compared to the original one where that resistor is very solid. It probably would have helped to have headlight on so the reg had less amps to dump. I have had a Sachse and an American one (company out of biz now) and both gave different problems, but the expensive Bosch solid state one has been perfect. If you want to carry a spare for touring get a Sachse, tiny thing, and have some wiring ready made up for easy swap.
 
Couldn't get the output down below 17 volts with original adjustable Bosch unit, rode with headlight on high beam. 30 amp VW modern unit solved the issue, but then piston pin played up after 14,000km. In the queue......
 
Thanks all. It’s been fitted for at least 10k miles and works well, but I’d like something I either have more confidence in or have a spare - I’ve got two of the OE regs, but they’re 50 years old. The electronic Bosch sounds like the best solution, but having said that I’m an advocate of not fixing things which aren’t broken.

All my 750s run the original Bosch regulator. They're trouble free as long as they're rubber mounted and offer some maintenance possibilities.

Ok thanks, I was a bit concerned there was an issue using these regs. The original regulator on the Eagle was in good order and working fine however I intended to ride the bike fair distances and often away from any major centre (out bush) so when I saw Marty's solution I thought that sounded like a good idea. I installed the VW unit assuming it would be very reliable with no maintenance and I carry my original one as a spare (Or obviously if needs to return it to original). Nobody would know I run this modern regulator on the shabby old Eagle. Has been trouble free................

The originals are just about bullet proof, they will outlast most of us if they're correctly mounted!

As many have been abused in the past, one just doesn't know what one's up against.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
If our 750 Twins Bosch generator (outputing DC current) is 11 Amps rated (132 Watts)
Then this 30 Amps rated VW regulator (360 Watts @ 12 Volts) should theorically do the job no problem.

But as Rob suggested, even though the original regulator is very robust (if correctly installed), I would gladly go for the cosmetically identical solid-state option (although relatively expensive).
Which I've never tested, though.

I think that using a 30A rated regulator will try and drive the Laverda dynamo output up towards that limit if sufficient load demands it. Assuming that you've not connected extra lights or heated riding gear etc then the regulator will presumably limit output to what is needed and the dynamo won't be over stressed.

The electro gurus can chime in and explain why all the suppliers of solid state regulators have different units for the different amp ratings.
