Nuts to the rivet counters !

Hey All

Stand by your anoraks ..........  :D

There are a number of nuts across the front of my RGS crank cases, can't recall how many or what size (6MM ?).

The majority are standard nuts however there are two, one at each end that are longer and blind. Is this correct ? Why would different nuts be used ?

                          Cheers

Blimey Matt - this is getting serious!  Guess you need to get out riding it rather than lookin at it  ;)

There are seven studs across the front of the cases and each has an ordinary nut (at least on my '83 RGS) & washer fitted.  Perhaps mice got at the threads?  :D

Matt , as you know I'm always on hand to help find solutions to these difficult technical problems, selflessly giving of my time to others who are mechanically challenged in order to help them bring their projects to fruition.

Generous to a fault, that's me...

as Rob says they should all be 6mm thread plain nuts (10mm spanner size) with washers (if you are talking as originally made).

At one time a domed stainless nut was available to tidy up the look of the front of the motor and cover the long exposed thread that normally rusts because of its exposure to road salt etc, Stevio did have some a few years ago but they ran out and he  did not get any more, I have been trying to get some made, and will put a bit more effort into it, I will probably commission  500 so will be able to sell to 71.4 owners.

Or if you really want to go the whole hog then replace the rusted studs with threaded stainless M6 bar cut to length.

no Grant, I dislike removeing those flimsy crankcase studs, and any way once covered they will be fine, as original, in fact they are fine when not covered as original, just a little crude looking.

I've got a big pile of domed 6mm nuts in stainless so Clem/Matt / Rob, if you want some let me know and I'll sort some out for you. I'm probably down to my last 300 so be quick!
Whether they're the correct depth for a Laverda crankcase stud is another matter of course, I'm happy to check if someone lets me know the correct length.

Thanks, Mr Arkwright  :D

There's about 10mm of thread poking out beyond the washer on my RGS, and 12mm on the 180

Well Granville, these have got an 11mm recess so you'd need a thick washer on your 180...

Hey All

Thanks for the help with such a complex technical query ...........  :D

Rob

Agreed ..........This weekend will be spent putting the bike together now I have all the parts I need, refreshed head just back from Keith ......... :P...........TT is only a few weeks away.

Bob
I have used most of the bolt types in your catalogue and would appreciate some domed nuts as well. The squirrel type you can keep.

                             Cheers

I measured three engines and 12mm of stud protrudes
so the nut will have to be deep enough to cover that, and with a bit of lead in/wasted/waisted threading ,I am guessing at 14mm depth.
heavy washers are available of course, but the close proximity of the stud to the front of the cases means that the OD cannot increase, which it usually does with ready made extra heavy washers.

BOB, send me a dozen of your nuts (pre washed please and de haired) I expect that will mean  a special commisioning is worthless, PM me for prepayment.

I'll be back in work on Tuesday and will pinch a slack handful out of the fastener cabinet. There's no charge for you lucky three winners, just stick a couple of quid in the box the next time a Salvation Army soldier waves a tin at you.
