Posted this here, rather than technical, as it is not directly related to Laverda.
Putting 1992 Mazda 929 HD series back on the road ( historic vehicle registration ie cost effective ), many the tasks, not too mention 6 electronic modules which worry even myself. Alternator was putting out 15.5 Volts, the whole dash illuminates when this happens. Alternator is accessible though not easily inspected. Silly me removed the alternator and damaged it on disassembly ( field wires are soldered onto the Regulator sub assembly ).
There is a two pin output socket, on the Mitsubishi 90Amp alternator, never really bothering to check the actual function, mistake one. The two pins, one for dash lamp drive of battery problem dash lamp. The second, oh no, it is the external voltage sense, sure enough the plug and socket were corroded despite the sealed type connection. This alternator most probable was ok, though the slip rings were well tired and grooved, fixable on my lathe....yet it was an ex wreckers alternator by the crayon writing on it, bought the car used and with well known blown head gaskets issue from blocked radiator. VRS kit cost $950 in 2008!
All but ruined a 30+ year old alternator, because the external sense circuit connection was high resistance, which i did not inspect closely at first. Only saving factor, the internal regulator sub assembly is all but non existent, combined brushes and reg. $77 if you do find one that maybe will work....maybe.
Bought a new failed install OEX alternator from a bloke, will adapt the mounting configuration and alignment as in true Laverda skills have learnt over the years.
For those that dabble in car motor poly phase alternators, beware the external voltage sense, catches the worst and best of us. Just like in Laverda encounters. j
