Posted this here, rather than technical, as it is not directly related to Laverda.

Putting 1992 Mazda 929 HD series back on the road ( historic vehicle registration ie cost effective ), many the tasks, not too mention 6 electronic modules which worry even myself. Alternator was putting out 15.5 Volts, the whole dash illuminates when this happens. Alternator is accessible though not easily inspected. Silly me removed the alternator and damaged it on disassembly ( field wires are soldered onto the Regulator sub assembly ).

There is a two pin output socket, on the Mitsubishi 90Amp alternator, never really bothering to check the actual function, mistake one. The two pins, one for dash lamp drive of battery problem dash lamp. The second, oh no, it is the external voltage sense, sure enough the plug and socket were corroded despite the sealed type connection. This alternator most probable was ok, though the slip rings were well tired and grooved, fixable on my lathe....yet it was an ex wreckers alternator by the crayon writing on it, bought the car used and with well known blown head gaskets issue from blocked radiator. VRS kit cost $950 in 2008!

All but ruined a 30+ year old alternator, because the external sense circuit connection was high resistance, which i did not inspect closely at first. Only saving factor, the internal regulator sub assembly is all but non existent, combined brushes and reg. $77 if you do find one that maybe will work....maybe.

Bought a new failed install OEX alternator from a bloke, will adapt the mounting configuration and alignment as in true Laverda skills have learnt over the years.

For those that dabble in car motor poly phase alternators, beware the external voltage sense, catches the worst and best of us. Just like in Laverda encounters. j
 
Yes Chris, to my eternal shame, some clear minded thinking ( usually not anywhere near the item to be diagnosed or repaired ), a moment of not hasty thought, that action would have me feeling much better about later life acumen.

No question i am on the slide, how low and how fast i will resist. May work out better, i have a notion, the replacement alternator on the way, a universal 4wd high current type, with backup spares like the internal regulator available. VP4 pulley swap if lucky, or no, have a lathe to sleeve or bore the original pulley, really a matter of knowing what to do. Much of that is gained from keeping many Laverda running, the hard work has compensations, in cases like this.

Just bought a jap import Mazda JE motor, as spares or swap, just investigating doing the valve stem seals with the cylinder head on, with 24 valves on this engine... clever thinking is foremost the most valued aspect.... do wish me luck, not so much the "merry Christmas...a grin here..j
 
In my case physical decline here sadly, years ago this would have been a doddle. I just discovered a 350mm x 40mm x 3.300m I think an Australian Cedar barge board laying in my front yard off my historically listed Federation House. The result of 120-year-old rusty nails and some big winds we had. It is easy enough to fix back in place except for hiring 6.5m of scaffold to reach its resting spot. Fun and games I am dreading in the new year. I am too old for this shit.

Can you do it lying on the roof? There’s more ways of killing a cat than drowning it in cream
 
The 120-year-old Terra Cotta roof tiles are as brittle as glass so no chance of that option, cherry picker is also out so are ladder brackets. It's a big Bay-style front. Skyhook would be good. About 15 years back the other side came adrift including the gable end rafter, not collapsing but moving well away from its spot. The 240-volt point of attachment from the street was attached to it and that's a big load. That was a way bigger issue, I needed to drill and fit a 1.8m x 16mm threaded rod through the next adjacent 4 rafters attaching nuts and plates against all of those rafters to make good and sure it never happened again. I probably should have rebuilt that same scaffold 3mitres over and added some Gal Bugle heads on the other barge, hindsight is 20 / 20. Obvasly Nail Guns were not around 120 years back, it was all hand nailed, and only 6 rusty toothpicks left I could see. I had Mowed there a week ago, happy it hadn't dropped on my head then.
