Oil screen

Does anyone know the mesh size of the oil screen used on a Laverda 750? I may need to fabricate a similar pickup oil screen for a '50s vintage Italian motorcycle engine (Morini 175) with roller bearing mains, needle bearing rod.
 
Ha! I don't think it matters all that much - it filters out anything smaller than a mouse.

Sorry the first reply had to be smartarsed. Hopefully someone who actually knows the answer will be along shortly.
 
Somewhat fine and double wrap it - Enough to keep Teflon shrapnel out of the oil galleries and pump ;o)

Change your 15W40 Diesel oil often and flush the screen. Once or Twice a year depending on use.

True, Ron. Gotta keep those flakes of work cam chain rollers out of the rocker spindles, where they can wreak oil-starvation havoc.
 
Actually, the advice that it only needs to be small enough to keep the mice out is probably about right. The engine may have run quite a while with no filter at all, as there was none in there when I inspected. The seller had never looked that far into it, so it's probably been that way since the last rebuild. The inlet hole to the oil feed pipe is probably the best answer for "no larger than this". But I just heard from the seller that he found a beat-up original filter from another engine that he's sending me so I can count the mesh size on that. I also got advice that 40x40 is about right from a very experienced motorcycle engine builder I know, and I have some 40x40 brass mesh on order. I'm still curious about what Luciano Zen thought the mesh size on the 750s ought to be. Next time I drop the plate to change the oil I will count the mesh.

Hi Eric,

Three sizes according to the performance of the engine.

1) Mice, for slow reving jobs
2) cockroach for sports machines
3) ants for full blown racing machines.

Quite honestly, I don't think it matters.

Pretty right, Paul. I don't think I've ever found anything caught in the gauze in all the oil changes I've done - not so in the oil outlet holes in the rocker spindles that feed directly onto the cam lobes - have found worrying flakes trying their hardest to sabotage longevity!

Can you get magnets that attract plasticky, neopreny, teflony flakes?  8)
 
kits are available to replace the sump plate with one that contains a boss for a sump plug my dear Ron, currently from UK enthusiast lemon jelly or LJ2, aka Shaun Dampier, but have been available for years prior to this from a number of sources.

The interesting thing here is that the 180 engines have a courser mesh sump strainer than the 120's and it is (more or less) only the 120's that can suffer blocked strainers from fluff due to changing the oil, and the new stuff being incompatible with the remnants of the old stuff, be careful out there lads.

Ha, ha.

I've come across several blocked older 180 strainers due to over-enthusiatic use of unsuitable sealing compounds.  In one case, it cost the customer 3 sets of cams and cam bearings before he heeded advice and wised up...

It has to hurt before some people learn. :D
