Oil seal

The Countershaft sprocket oil seal (the one that's on the ouside of the shaft not internal??) on my SFC 1000 has been weeping for awhile so I decided to replace it. Simple job, pull the old one out, clean up the surfaces a bit, make sure there's no sharp edges or anything. Put the new one in (with a bit of oil on it) and away I go. Problem is - the new one doesn't appear to seal onto the steel spacer ring like the old one. There is a gap of about 0.5mm (by eye) between the I.D of the Oil seal and the O.D of the steel spacer, and I'm sure that the old Oil seal actually sealed against the steel spacer?? Mind you there was a bit of crap and stuff around the old seal and I didn't take that much notice! Understandably nervous, I went for a ride only for about 5kms, got home, pulled the sprocket off and it was bone dry there - not a sign of a leak.
Am I just being nervous about this or has anybody come across this before? Is there different seals from different manufacturers? (This new seal I think is part of a complete gasket set that was purchased from Wolfgang a number of years ago and is blue and yellow in colour - dims 45/60/7. The old oil seal is black in colour - dims 45/60/8) I will go for a longer ride this weekend - but if anybodys got any thoughts.........
Cheers,
Keith.

Keith are you sure the inner lip didn't rollover whilst insering the seal and make it look like there was a gap, if there was a gap I am sure you would have seen oil leaking from that area if there is oil in your engine.

Yeah I agree with you on both counts there - my first thoughts were that the lip had rolled over - but of course I didn't want to take it out again............
And I'm sure as well even after my short ride there would have been oil leaking.........
I've gone and ordered myself a new one anyway, so I'll go for another ride this weekend (careful on the Right hand corners though!) and if there's no leaks it should be good?? and if it leaks I'll have a replacement soon anyway.
Cheers,
Keith.

Hear is a quick tip for seals, fork seals in particular.Get a length of 35mm film negative and oil it up,gentle slide it into where you want to either clear the crap out, fork seal,or adjust the lip in your case and saw away at a 45 degree angle.Take care as it can cut the lip. This works well n forks, don't know about your case though.

It sounds like you removed a double lip seal , (one with an included external dust seal) and that you have fitted a single lip seal (just an inner seal). IF that is the case, it will work the same but may be prone to wear if dirt or grit gets around the seal and spacer.

I think you're right Rob.
I've just received my new seal and it's distinctively different to the one I pulled out. It has a flatter sealing lip/surface than the original and no dust lip to speak of - so I'm happy now, and I've been for a 100 km run and no problems. :D
Cheers,
Keith.

Being a Laverda I just took my old seal into the local agricultural oil seal shop and they gave me new one! I always suspect there is a bit of tractor in there somewhere!
