One for the rivet counters

This has really got me thinking, the ring seems like overkill then. Is there a logical reason a ring that size would be used?? Oil flinging or something??? Stepped washers would hold it all together, so why the ring?

It keeps the rubbers in their cavity once they start to disintergrate.  Saves you from fiddling around with bits of wire bent to a hook, fishing rubber remnants from the inside of the crankcase. :D
