The tank Shop?

I know a couple of blokes who've had bodywork done by him & it's lovely.

Mind you, he can be devastatingly slow...

If you have a few basic skills with fibreglass, timber, urethane foam, body filler[lots] and paint it's not too hard making one yourself. To do it properly the plug need to be done on the bike frame so you get the fit spot on.

These have been finished in acylic laquer and now ready to make a fibreglass mold from.
Made from MDF, Jellutong timber and bodyfiller. If the shape gets too complicated you might have to make the mold in several parts that bolt together.
As for the seat foam, you could either buy a block of foam and shape it or what I'll be doing which is making a mold of the foam shape and pouring my own.
It comes in a 2 parts you mix together and pour into the closed mold. It comes in different density.
That way you get a nice smooth skin on the surface

Hi John,

I was going to suggest contacting your local fibreglass Resin supplies for the foam. Make sure your not buying hard 2 part polyurethane. I don't have a great deal of experance with cussion foam, actually I don't have any experance with it!!!. I once worked on one of the Star War movies as a model maker and made a heap of patterns of various seat cussion shapes for the space crafts and furnishings.
We had a molding department that did all the molds etc from the patterns I made, so I've only ever watched it done. It's not hard.
So talk to the people who supply the stuff and they should give you the ins and out.
You could use 2 part urethane, the hard stuff, to shape the seat cussion, then skin it with polyester and fine cloth, surface fill and sand [I hate sanding] smooth, then make a fibreglass mold from that, or just buy a chunk of urethane to shape. Lots of options out there so talk to the experts for best advice.

Davo, as for skills shinning through, thanks for the compliment but it's more arse than class :o

Hi Rob, Have followed your posts about your seat unit with interest. Jolly nice work. After some deliberation i think i'll give it a go. There may well be questions :D :D :D :D

Rob,
One can only read and learn.
This cushion foam is completely new to me, but like the idea very much, and will give it a try.
A comercial name for the cusion foam, by chance?
Boba

Yes Cam but the early seats split and fell apart very quickly. Maybe modern materials would prevent this.
Have to say they looked ok though.

Hi Boba,
Can't give you a brand name but what it is, is a Urethane foam. The ridgit stuff your probably familar with for shaping stuff to make molds from. It also comes in a flexable form and all varying densities in between. The stuff I have in mind forms a skin on the surface. When I watched it done more than 10 years ago, it was poured into a closed mold with a small openning for excess to ooze out. I think you need to be reasonably accurate with volume when pouring though.
Talk to you local plastic molding companies and I'm sure they'll lead you in the right direction.
Here is a link to a Perth company I'll be talking to when I get to that stage.

Good luck

Rob

Also, how much is carbon cloth over in your neck of the woods?
I feel I'm getting robbed here having to pay $80 metre!! I've been through 15 metres [as well as 5 metres of kevlar] so far and now looks like I still don't have enough.
